Doha, Qatar – Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Rumailah Hospital has achieved a significant international recognition, becoming the first memory services department outside of the United Kingdom to earn Developmental Accreditation from the Memory Services National Accreditation Programme (MSNAP) of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. This milestone underscores HMC’s dedication to providing world-class dementia care in Qatar and positions the hospital as a global leader in the field. The accreditation was awarded following a rigorous, in-person peer review process.

The announcement, made by HMC officials, highlights the growing need for specialized care for individuals experiencing memory loss and cognitive decline. Qatar, like many nations, is facing an aging population, leading to an increased prevalence of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This accreditation demonstrates HMC’s proactive approach to meeting this challenge.

Rumailah Hospital’s Pioneering Dementia Care Program

Rumailah Hospital’s Memory Services, established in 2012, functions as Qatar’s national center for memory and cognitive health. The department provides comprehensive support to older adults and their families, encompassing early assessment, coordinated care pathways, and person-centered treatment. This holistic approach aims to improve quality of life for patients and reduce the burden on caregivers.

The MSNAP accreditation process is known for its thoroughness, evaluating services against stringent UK best practice standards. According to HMC, the review specifically commended the department’s strong leadership, a clearly defined vision, and the effective collaboration between its multidisciplinary teams.

Key Strengths Identified by MSNAP

The peer review identified several areas of exceptional performance within Rumailah Hospital’s Memory Services. These included a highly aligned and supported staff, demonstrably committed to patient-focused care.

Additionally, the review highlighted the positive impact of RAHA, Qatar’s National Alzheimer’s and Memory Services Helpline, noting favorable feedback from both patients and their families. RAHA provides crucial support and information to those navigating the complexities of cognitive impairment.

Strong governance systems were also recognized as a key factor in ensuring quality and patient safety. These systems support consistent, evidence-based practices throughout the department.

This achievement builds upon HMC’s existing leadership in geriatric care, which was further solidified in 2023 with the designation of the Department of Geriatrics as a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Healthy Ageing and Dementia. This WHO recognition underscores Qatar’s commitment to addressing the global health challenge of an aging population.

The MSNAP accreditation is particularly noteworthy as it signifies a developmental stage, indicating a commitment to continuous improvement and a pathway towards full accreditation. This suggests that Rumailah Hospital is not simply meeting current standards, but actively striving to enhance its services further.

The growing field of neurological care is seeing increased investment globally, driven by research into early detection and potential treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. Qatar’s investment in specialized services like those at Rumailah Hospital reflects this trend and a commitment to providing its citizens with access to cutting-edge medical care.

Looking ahead, HMC will continue to work towards full MSNAP accreditation, building on the foundation established by this developmental milestone. The organization is also expected to share its expertise and best practices with other healthcare providers in the region, potentially fostering improvements in dementia care across the Middle East. Further developments in national strategies for dementia support and research will be crucial to watch in the coming years.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists offers further information on the MSNAP program and its accreditation standards. Hamad Medical Corporation provides details on its range of healthcare services. RAHA Qatar is a valuable resource for individuals and families affected by dementia.
