The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has officially opened submissions for the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport 2026, a biennial competition recognizing innovation and excellence in the transportation sector. The award, now in its 12th iteration, aims to encourage sustainable practices and solutions across various modes of transport2m, including public transit, road infrastructure, and intelligent transport systems. Entries will be accepted until September 30, 2025, with winners announced in early 2026.

The announcement, made on May 16, 2024, invites organizations and individuals from around the globe to participate. The Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport seeks to highlight projects and initiatives that contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving traffic flow, enhancing accessibility, and promoting the use of environmentally friendly transportation options within urban environments. The competition is divided into several categories, each focusing on a specific aspect of sustainable mobility.

Focus on Sustainable Transport2m Innovations

The core objective of the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport is to foster a global community dedicated to developing and implementing innovative solutions for a more sustainable future in transportation. According to the RTA, the award aligns with Dubai’s broader vision of becoming a smart and sustainable city, as outlined in the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040. This plan prioritizes efficient public transport, pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and the integration of advanced technologies.

Award Categories and Criteria

The 2026 award features five main categories. These include: Safety & Security, Environmental Sustainability, Social Responsibility, Innovation & Technology, and Infrastructure. Each category has specific criteria related to impact, scalability, and originality.

Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of experts from both local and international organizations. The judging process will prioritize projects demonstrating measurable results and a clear commitment to long-term sustainability. The RTA emphasizes that projects should showcase practical applications and the potential for replication in other urban settings.

Additionally, the RTA has introduced a new special category this year focusing on micro-mobility solutions, reflecting the growing importance of scooters, bicycles, and other small-scale transportation options in urban areas. This addition underscores Dubai’s commitment to diversifying its transport network and promoting first/last-mile connectivity.

The award isn’t solely focused on large-scale infrastructure projects. Smaller-scale initiatives, such as innovative apps for public transport or community-based carpooling programs, are also encouraged to apply. This broad scope aims to attract a diverse range of participants and highlight the multifaceted nature of sustainable transport.

Previous Winners and Impact

Past winners of the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport have included projects ranging from advanced traffic management systems to electric bus fleets and pedestrianization initiatives. The RTA reports that previous award recipients have often seen increased investment and wider adoption of their solutions.

For example, the 2022 award recognized a project implementing a real-time passenger information system that significantly improved the user experience on Dubai’s metro network. This system, according to RTA data, led to a 15% increase in metro ridership within six months of its implementation.

However, the impact of the award extends beyond direct project implementation. It also serves as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration among transport professionals worldwide. The RTA regularly organizes workshops and conferences alongside the award ceremony to facilitate the exchange of best practices and emerging trends in the field of transportation.

In contrast to some industry awards that focus primarily on technological advancements, the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport places a strong emphasis on the social and environmental impact of projects. This holistic approach reflects Dubai’s commitment to creating a truly sustainable urban environment.

The growing interest in urban mobility solutions is a key driver behind the award’s continued success. As cities around the world grapple with issues such as congestion, pollution, and accessibility, the need for innovative and sustainable transport solutions has never been greater. The RTA believes the award plays a vital role in accelerating the development and deployment of these solutions.

Meanwhile, the RTA is also investing heavily in its own sustainable transport infrastructure. Recent projects include the expansion of the Dubai Metro network, the development of a comprehensive cycling infrastructure, and the introduction of electric buses into the public transport fleet. These initiatives demonstrate Dubai’s commitment to leading the way in sustainable transportation.

The RTA’s commitment to sustainable practices is further evidenced by its ongoing efforts to integrate smart technologies into its transport systems. This includes the use of artificial intelligence to optimize traffic flow, predictive maintenance to reduce downtime, and data analytics to improve service planning. These technologies are essential for creating a more efficient and resilient transport network.

The selection process will involve an initial screening of applications, followed by a detailed evaluation by the judging panel. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to present their projects in person to the panel. The RTA aims to ensure a fair and transparent evaluation process.

Looking ahead, the RTA will continue to refine the award criteria and categories to reflect the evolving landscape of sustainable transport. The next step involves reviewing the submitted applications and selecting the finalists. The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in Dubai in early 2026. It remains to be seen how the increasing focus on electric vehicles and autonomous driving will influence the submissions and the judging criteria in future iterations of the award.
