The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) recently announced the seven winning research projects for the Royal Grant for strategic research projects for 2024. The event took place on the 24th anniversary of SQU Day and was held under the patronage of Dr. Khamis bin Saif Al Jabri, Chairman of the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit. Dr. Amer bin Saif Al Hinai, Deputy Vice Chancellor of SQU for postgraduate studies and research, highlighted the university’s dedication to research and innovation as key drivers for economic and digital transformation. The conference aimed to enhance the university’s global scientific standing and align with the vision of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to support education, research, and innovation.

Dr. Al Hinai emphasized SQU’s commitment to advancing scientific research to achieve sustainable development and meet the needs of society. He stressed the importance of empowering young individuals with knowledge and skills to create a competitive knowledge-based society. The conference featured speakers and scholars from Oman and beyond, discussing the significance of scientific research and innovation in global economic competitiveness in the twenty-first century. Suggestions were made to support social and economic development and develop practical solutions for economic and digital transformation challenges faced by Omani society and other global communities.

The ceremony showcased the results of scientific research conducted by university researchers through an exhibition, along with a scientific library, research projects, and an innovation and technology corner. The three-day conference included sessions on supporting Oman Vision 2040, analyzing economic growth through research and innovation, and exploring technological development and digital transformation. The winning projects covered various topics such as olives production enhancement, management of Parthenium, reduction of carbon dioxide levels using solar energy, technical evaluation of low-energy air conditioning systems, risk assessment of micro-plastics, and designing effective carbon dioxide transformation systems.

Among the winning projects were studies on increasing olives production and value addition in Oman, managing Parthenium invasions, and reducing carbon dioxide levels by converting it into beneficial products using sustainable solar energy. Other projects included technical evaluations of low-energy air conditioning systems and risk assessments of micro-plastics at wastewater treatment plants. Additionally, research was conducted on improving air conditioning efficiency in buildings and designing systems to transform carbon dioxide into poly-carbons or organic carbon. These projects reflect SQU’s dedication to innovative research that addresses critical societal and environmental challenges.

In conclusion, the Royal Grant for strategic research projects awarded to these outstanding works demonstrates SQU’s commitment to promoting research and innovation in alignment with Oman Vision 2040. Through empowering young researchers and scholars, the university aims to contribute to global scientific advancements and economic competitiveness. By focusing on sustainable development and relevant solutions to societal challenges, SQU continues to enhance its reputation as a leading institution for transformative research and innovation. The winning projects serve as a testament to the university’s dedication to excellence and its role in driving positive change in Omani society and beyond.
