Joe Root’s exceptional performance on the cricket field on October 9, 2024, during the Test match between Pakistan and England in Multan, Pakistan, made headlines. Root scored a century, reaching 119 not out by tea time on the third day of the match. This remarkable innings also saw him break Alastair Cook’s Test runs record, becoming England’s highest run-scorer in Tests and the fifth-highest overall in the history of the game.

During the match, Harry Brook also shone with his 10th Test half-century, scoring 64 not out. The partnership between Root and Brook for the fourth wicket yielded 102 runs, helping England to reach 351-3 at tea, trailing Pakistan’s first innings total of 556 by 205 runs. Root showed his class by hitting eight fours, while Brook hit seven, proving their dominance over the Pakistani bowlers on a flat Multan stadium pitch that offered no assistance to the bowling side.

Earlier in the match, Root had combined with Ben Duckett to put on 136 runs for the third wicket. Duckett, despite battling a thumb dislocation, made an impressive 84 runs with 11 boundaries before being dismissed after lunch. The Pakistani fast bowlers managed to take wickets but struggled overall to contain the English batting line-up. The day belonged to Root, who surpassed Cook’s record in 268 innings and 147 Tests, showcasing his consistency and longevity in the sport.

Root’s achievement was recognized by the cricketing community, with former England captain Cook predicting that Root could even surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record as the all-time highest run-scorer in Test matches. Tendulkar currently holds the record with 15,921 runs from 200 matches. Despite the challenges ahead, Root’s hunger and drive for success in the game were evident, making him a strong contender to achieve this monumental feat in the future.

Overall, Root’s performance in Multan exemplified his skill and determination as a batsman. His record-breaking century against Pakistan not only solidified his place in cricketing history but also showcased his leadership and resilience on the field. As England’s highest run-scorer in Tests, Root continues to set new benchmarks for excellence in the sport, inspiring cricket fans worldwide.
