Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo faced an inglorious exit in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-final against France. The 5-3 loss on penalties was a devastating blow for the 39-year-old superstar who failed to make a significant impact throughout the tournament. Despite high expectations and a perfect record in Euros qualification, Portugal under-performed with Ronaldo failing to score in five matches. With no goals in his last nine major tournament appearances, questions arose about his effectiveness on the field.

Coach Roberto Martinez stood by Ronaldo, keeping him as the team’s figurehead despite his lackluster performances. The decision to maintain Ronaldo in crucial moments, even when alternatives like Diogo Jota and Goncalo Ramos were available, raised eyebrows. Despite missing clear opportunities, like a crucial chance against France in extra time, Ronaldo’s presence heavily influenced Portugal’s style of play. The team often resorted to crossing the ball in search of Ronaldo, limiting their attacking options.

Martinez’s reluctance to make significant changes, including substituting Ronaldo in key moments, contributed to Portugal’s downfall. The ‘cult of Cristiano’ among fans and supporters further complicated the situation, with the idolization of Ronaldo impacting team dynamics. The emotional reaction of Ronaldo, including tears after missing a penalty against Slovenia, seemed more personal than team-oriented. Despite the disappointment of his final Euros, Ronaldo admitted that it would be his last appearance in the tournament.

As Portugal shifts its focus to the 2026 World Cup, the absence of Ronaldo may benefit the team’s chances of success. The aging superstar’s decline in form and impact on the field has raised concerns about his future in international football. While Ronaldo’s legacy as one of the greatest footballers of all time is secure, his recent performances have highlighted the need for Portugal to evolve and adapt without their iconic forward. As the team prepares for new challenges ahead, the spotlight will shift from the Ronaldo circus to a new era of Portuguese football.
