After more than fifteen days of Olympic festivities, the French capital of Paris is basking in a sense of heightened security and good mood, thanks to the success of the Paris Olympics. The morning after the closing ceremony, French people woke up to headlines praising the event and the newfound fervour it brought to the city. Residents and tourists alike have enjoyed the safe and clean atmosphere of Paris during the games, with many hoping that this positive vibe can continue even after the Olympics have ended.

The owner of a news kiosk in the central 7th arrondissement of Paris noted that his biggest morning sale was the sports daily newspaper featuring France’s Olympic champion, Léon Marchand. While the summer may not have been as lucrative as expected for some local businesses, the overall atmosphere in Paris has been described as magical. Residents like Gaby were pleasantly surprised by the smooth organization of the games, with dedicated areas for tourists and heightened security measures in place near competition sites.

Despite the positive vibes in Paris, some locals express concerns about the security measures, with one restaurant manager noting that more could have been done in terms of checking vehicles entering the area. The memories of the 2016 Nice attack, where a terrorist killed 86 people by driving a truck into a crowd, still linger in France. However, many remain hopeful that the safe and clean environment experienced during the Olympics can be maintained in the city.

As the city slowly transitions into a post-Olympic hangover, residents are also preparing to face the political reality in France. While the former government has continued in a caretaker role during the games, the nation is still without a new prime minister. French President Emmanuel Macron will need to address the deadlocked government that has persisted since the snap legislative elections were called in June. As Paris returns to its everyday life, it will be interesting to see how the city maintains the positive changes brought about by the Olympic games.

Overall, the Paris Olympics have left a lasting impact on the city, with residents and tourists alike enjoying the festive atmosphere and heightened security. While some concerns remain about the security measures in place, many are hopeful that the positive changes experienced during the games can continue in Paris. As the city transitions into a post-Olympic phase, it will be important for leaders to address the political situation and ensure that the momentum from the Olympics is not lost. Parisians can look back on these weeks with fond memories and pride in hosting a successful Olympic event.
