Saudi Arabia has recently been recognized for its exceptional efforts in cybersecurity, ranking at the top position globally in the Global Cybersecurity Index for 2024. Naif Al-Wakid, head of the Anti-Fraud Prosecution under the Saudi Public Prosecution, revealed that the Kingdom has the lowest rate of financial fraud crimes worldwide. Despite a surge in global financial fraud crimes, Saudi Arabia stands out for its outstanding protection of government electronic systems.

According to Al-Wakid, investigations by the Public Prosecution have not recorded any financial fraud crimes resulting from cyber system breaches in the Kingdom. Instead, all registered crimes were due to criminals exploiting victims’ personal data. He emphasized the importance of individuals being aware of the methods used by fraudsters and urged victims to immediately report any incidences of fraud to law enforcement agencies.

Financial fraud prosecutions operate continuously in all regions of the Kingdom, receiving reports of financial fraud from law enforcement agencies seven days a week. Al-Wakid highlighted that the Kingdom is below the global average in financial fraud crimes, despite cybercrime operations amounting to $6.5 trillion in 2021 and expected to reach $10.5 trillion in 2025. He warned against falling for deceptive advertisements that promise rapid investment and instant wealth, which are popular methods used by fraudsters to ensnare victims.

Al-Wakid underlined the importance of protecting citizens’ data in government services like ‘Absher’ and the ‘National Single Sign-On’ initiative, referring to it as a ‘red line.’ He cautioned against sharing verification codes or personal information with untrusted parties, as fraudsters can gain access to personal data even with a strong protective barrier if they possess the key. The Public Prosecution is working on enhancing procedural measures to achieve prompt justice in combating financial fraud crimes and will continue to pursue fraudsters to protect citizens’ and residents’ funds.

In terms of preventing fraud, Al-Wakid provided practical tips on ensuring the safety of electronic links and avoiding falling victim to fraud. He advised individuals to meticulously examine links and verify their authenticity with relevant authorities before interacting with them, as well as promptly report any attempted fraud regardless of the amount involved. The Public Prosecution’s crime patterns analysis unit plays a crucial role in analyzing data and studying criminal patterns to identify relationships between crimes and criminals, aiding in uncovering recurring crimes and their geographical locations.

Overall, Saudi Arabia’s effort to combat financial fraud crimes and protect citizens’ data in the digital age is commendable. With continuous vigilance and proactive measures, the Kingdom is setting a high standard in cybersecurity and fraud prevention, ensuring the safety and security of individuals’ financial information. It is essential for individuals to remain vigilant, educate themselves on the methods used by fraudsters, and report any suspicious activities to authorities promptly to uphold the Kingdom’s position as a global leader in cybersecurity.
