Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, recently suffered a medial meniscus tear in his right knee during a match at the French Open. The Serbian tennis player has decided to undergo surgery for the injury, which could potentially cause him to miss Wimbledon, according to a report from French newspaper L’Equipe. Djokovic withdrew from the French Open after his fourth-round victory and was set to play in the quarterfinals before the decision was made to undergo surgery.

The operation for Djokovic’s knee injury was scheduled to take place in Paris on Wednesday. Djokovic’s agent, Mark Madden, has not yet made a statement regarding the situation. Wimbledon, where Djokovic has won seven trophies, is set to begin on July 1, and the Summer Olympics in Paris will commence on July 27. Djokovic’s absence from these important tennis events would be a significant loss for the sport and his fans.

During his match at the French Open, Djokovic mentioned that he had been experiencing issues with his knee for a couple of weeks, but the injury worsened early in the second set. Despite the pain, Djokovic managed to secure a five-set victory over Francisco Cerundolo, marking his 370th Grand Slam match win. This achievement pushed Djokovic ahead of Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam match wins in tennis history.

As the No. 1 seed and defending champion at Roland Garros, Djokovic’s withdrawal from the tournament after his injury will have an impact on the ATP rankings. Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is expected to take Djokovic’s place atop the rankings following the Serbian’s departure from the French Open. Djokovic’s injury, surgery, and potential absence from upcoming tournaments has left fans and the tennis community anxiously awaiting updates on his recovery and future participation in competitive matches.
