Renowned Egyptian Artist Wael Shawky Named Artistic Director of Qatar Museums’ Fire Station: Artist in Residence

Qatar Museums (QM) has appointed renowned artist Wael Shawky as the first Artistic Director of Fire Station: Artist in Residence in Doha, Qatar. Shawky will oversee the institution’s program, which has supported almost one hundred emerging artists in Qatar and the region. H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of QM, praised Shawky’s talents and commitment to nurturing young artists. Shawky plans to transform the Fire Station into a platform for educational programs starting in September 2025.

Wael Shawky is known for his video work Drama 1882, representing Egypt at the Venice Biennale in 2024. His work spans film, performance, and storytelling and has been exhibited at prestigious institutions worldwide, including Tate Modern, MoMA PS1, and the Serpentine Gallery. Shawky also founded MASS Alexandria, an independent art school in Egypt. Shawky’s appointment as Artistic Director of Fire Station: Artist in Residence aligns with his passion for nurturing Arab artists and promoting creativity in the Middle East.

In his new role, Shawky will work closely with Qatar Museums to elevate the Fire Station’s programs and support the development of creative industries in the region. He aims to continue the institution’s success in fostering talent and providing opportunities for emerging artists. Shawky’s unique artistic perspective and dedication to education make him a valuable addition to the Fire Station team. The artist’s long-term commitment to supporting young artists and promoting creativity will be a driving force behind the institution’s future success.
