The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in Oman recently collaborated with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to host a regional workshop focused on achieving a balance between tower connections, safety, and power tower site selection in the Arab Region. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about human exposure to electromagnetic fields and discuss international recommendations and standards, regulatory and legal requirements for establishing communications towers, and national efforts in Arab countries. Attendees included telecommunications regulators, policy makers, ICT specialists, health and safety experts, and individuals interested in electromagnetic fields.

The workshop addressed common challenges in managing electromagnetic fields and proposed solutions within the framework of urban planning and construction of communications infrastructure. Participants engaged in panel discussions and working papers on the importance of evaluating and measuring the levels of electromagnetic fields, as well as drafting guidelines and protocols for these procedures. The event also introduced awareness initiatives to showcase practical ideas for measuring electromagnetic fields, demonstrating the importance of ensuring the safety of tower connections while maintaining effective communication infrastructure.

The workshop facilitated discussions on the significance of maintaining a balance between tower connections, safety, and power tower site selection to address the challenges associated with electromagnetic fields. It emphasized the importance of adhering to international recommendations and standards to ensure the safety of individuals exposed to electromagnetic fields. By bringing together telecommunications regulators, policy makers, and experts in various fields, the workshop provided a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices to promote the safe management of electromagnetic fields in the Arab Region.

In addition to discussing regulatory and legal requirements for establishing communications towers, the workshop highlighted national efforts in Arab countries to address the issue of electromagnetic fields. By introducing awareness initiatives and practical ideas for measuring electromagnetic fields, the event aimed to enhance the understanding of the potential risks associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields and promote effective safety measures. Through panel discussions and working papers, participants engaged in meaningful discussions on the importance of evaluating and measuring electromagnetic fields, emphasizing the need for guidelines and protocols to ensure the safety of individuals and maintain efficient communication infrastructure.

The workshop coincided with the ITU’s Group 5 meeting for Arab States, which focused on bridging the standardization gap related to electromagnetic fields. By providing training and resources to support the standardization efforts in the Arab Region, the workshop further reinforced the importance of adhering to international standards and recommendations for managing electromagnetic fields. As telecommunications technology continues to advance, it is essential for regulators and policymakers to prioritize the safety of individuals exposed to electromagnetic fields and establish best practices for the construction and maintenance of communication infrastructure to achieve a balance between tower connections, safety, and power tower site selection. Through collaborative efforts and knowledge-sharing initiatives, the workshop emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to managing electromagnetic fields to ensure the safety of individuals in the Arab Region.
