Prepare to be transported to a cinematic masterpiece with the unveiling of the iconic film Awara in a stunning 4K restoration. The National Film Development Corporation recently announced the world premiere of this restored classic at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2024, within the esteemed TIFF Classics section. Spearheaded by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India, this restoration effort breathes new life into the beloved film as part of the National Film Heritage Mission.

The impressive restoration project boasts enhanced colour grading skillfully overseen by Kunal Kapoor, ensuring that Awara retains its original essence while embracing a fresh, modern look. Funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India, this project is a tribute to Raj Kapoor’s centenary, to be celebrated in December 2024. Movie enthusiasts can witness the magic of Awara in all its 4K glory on September 13, 2024, at TIFF, experiencing Kapoor’s vision in a whole new light.

Directed and produced by Kapoor himself, Awara tells the story of Raj, a young man who turns to a life of crime after facing rejection and personal tragedies in society. The film delves into themes of fate, social injustice, and redemption, offering a poignant exploration of the human experience. What sets Awara apart is its perfect blend of melodrama and music, capturing Kapoor’s mastery over these elements that have made the film a timeless classic.
