Doha, Qatar – The Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) has issued a special weather forecast for Qatar National Day, Thursday, December 18, 2025, predicting potential thunderstorms and strong winds across the country. Residents and visitors celebrating the national holiday should prepare for a shift in weather conditions, with the possibility of heavy rainfall and increased sea levels. The forecast anticipates a transition from misty conditions to cloud cover, culminating in afternoon showers.

The inclement weather is expected to begin during the afternoon hours and continue into the night, with the strongest impacts occurring during periods of rainfall. The QMD warns of wind speeds reaching up to 45 knots during thunderstorms, and sea states rising to 16 feet. This forecast has implications for outdoor events planned for Qatar National Day and maritime activities.

Qatar National Day Weather: Expect Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

According to the QMD report, the initial weather pattern on Thursday will be characterized by mist, gradually giving way to increased cloud cover. The likelihood of rain, potentially thunderous in nature, is expected to increase as the afternoon progresses. Temperatures are also predicted to drop, resulting in colder conditions overnight.

Detailed Forecast Breakdown

The wind direction is forecast to be southeasterly to northeasterly, with speeds ranging from 8 to 18 knots. However, during periods of thunderstorms, these winds are expected to intensify significantly, gusting up to 45 knots. This increase in wind speed could lead to hazardous conditions for those outdoors and potentially disrupt transportation.

The sea state will initially be between 8 and 11 feet. The QMD anticipates a substantial rise to 16 feet during the thunderstorms, posing a risk to marine navigation and coastal areas. Individuals involved in fishing or other sea-based activities are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution or postpone their plans.

Qatar National Day celebrations often include outdoor events and activities. The predicted weather necessitates careful planning and potential adjustments to ensure public safety. Organizers of events should monitor the evolving weather situation and have contingency plans in place to address potential disruptions caused by the rain and wind.

The QMD’s announcement comes as Qatar prepares for a day of national pride and festivities. Qatar National Day commemorates the historic day in 1878 when Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani assumed leadership, unifying the country. The annual celebration typically features parades, cultural performances, and fireworks displays.

This year’s forecast differs from the generally mild and sunny weather often experienced during Qatar National Day. Previous years have seen comfortable temperatures and clear skies, allowing for uninterrupted outdoor celebrations. However, the current prediction highlights the importance of being prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions in the region, especially during the winter months. The potential for flash floods, though not specifically mentioned in the initial report, is a consideration given the possibility of intense rainfall.

The Ministry of Interior is likely to issue further advisories and safety guidelines as the weather situation develops. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by following official updates from the QMD and local authorities. Information regarding road closures or event cancellations will be disseminated through official channels. Staying updated on local news sources, such as The Peninsula Qatar, will also be beneficial.

Looking ahead, the QMD will continue to monitor the atmospheric conditions and provide updated forecasts as needed. The precise timing and intensity of the thunderstorms remain subject to change. Further details regarding the duration of the inclement weather and any potential follow-up effects will be released in subsequent reports. It is crucial to remain vigilant and adapt plans accordingly as the situation unfolds.

The impact of the weather on air travel is also something to watch. While no immediate disruptions have been announced, strong winds and reduced visibility could potentially affect flight schedules at Hamad International Airport. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest information regarding their flights.
