The Qatar Football Association (QFA) is investing in the future of its officiating program, recently providing a hands-on learning experience for up-and-coming referees during a Doha Bank Stars League match. The initiative, held at Al Thumama Stadium during the Al Arabi vs. Al Rayyan game on Sunday, aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical training and practical application for aspiring officials. This development underscores Qatar’s commitment to high-quality football administration as it continues to host major international tournaments.

Five promising referees – Ahmed Al Kaabi, Ezz El Din Al Jarmouzi, Hamad Al Tamimi, Ali Rashid, and Hamad Al Thawadi – participated in the program, observing elite officials before, during, and after the match. The experience included access to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room, offering a detailed look at the technology and processes used in modern football officiating. Jassim Al Hail, Vice Chairman of the Referees Committee, was present to oversee the program.

Developing Future Football Referees in Qatar

The QFA’s Referees Department organized this field experience as part of a broader strategy to cultivate a new generation of qualified referees capable of handling both domestic and international competitions. According to the QFA, the program is designed to enhance the skills and practical experience of these officials, preparing them for potential assignments at future tournaments. This proactive approach is particularly important as VAR technology becomes increasingly prevalent in global football.

Inside the VAR Room

A key component of the experience was the visit to the VAR room. Participants received a practical explanation of the VAR process, including how decisions are reviewed and communicated to the on-field officials. This is crucial preparation, as these referees are candidates to officiate international matches where VAR is standard procedure. Understanding the nuances of VAR implementation is vital for maintaining consistency and accuracy in officiating.

Observing Elite Performance

The aspiring officials weren’t simply passive observers. They were able to meet with the match officials and observe their pre-match preparations, including role assignments and communication strategies. Additionally, they witnessed firsthand how experienced referees manage the flow of the game, handle player interactions, and make critical decisions under pressure. This direct observation provides invaluable insights that cannot be replicated in a classroom setting.

However, developing strong officiating talent requires more than just observing experienced officials. It also necessitates a focus on mental and physical conditioning, as well as effective communication skills. The QFA’s program aims to address these areas, ensuring that future referees are well-rounded and prepared for the challenges of the role. The program also highlights the importance of teamwork among the refereeing crew.

The initiative comes as Qatar continues to solidify its position as a major hub for international football. Hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022 placed a spotlight on the country’s infrastructure and organizational capabilities, including its refereeing standards. Maintaining a high level of officiating is essential for attracting future events and upholding the integrity of the sport. The development of local talent in Qatar sports is a key priority.

Looking ahead, the QFA’s Referees Department plans to continue offering similar field experiences and training opportunities for promising officials. The next step will likely involve assessing the participants’ progress and providing individualized feedback to help them refine their skills. The long-term success of this program will depend on consistent investment and a commitment to identifying and nurturing talent. Further details regarding future training schedules and selection criteria are expected to be announced in the coming months, though specific timelines remain uncertain.
