Doha, Qatar – The Qatar Endurance Racing Club (QERC) is set to host the prestigious Al Zubarah International Cup this Friday at the Marathon Village in Sealine. The event will feature approximately 75 riders, both male and female, competing in a challenging 100km endurance race. This competition marks a significant moment in the Qatari equestrian calendar and highlights the nation’s growing prominence in the sport.

The Al Zubarah International Cup will commence with thorough veterinary checks to ensure the well-being of all participating horses. Following the inspections, riders will embark on the 100km course, divided into four phases: 35km, 25km, 20km, and 20km. The event builds on the success of the recent Al Wasmi Race, the opening competition of the 2025-2026 season.

The Al Zubarah International Cup: A Showcase of Equestrian Endurance

The QERC’s commitment to fostering a safe and competitive environment for endurance racing is evident in the meticulous planning surrounding the Al Zubarah International Cup. According to QERC Vice President Mohammed Majed Al Sulaiti, all organizational and coaching aspects have been carefully prepared to deliver a high-quality event. This dedication aims to attract top riders and promote the sport’s development within Qatar and internationally.

Endurance racing, a demanding discipline, tests the stamina and resilience of both horse and rider. Unlike sprint racing, it requires careful pacing, strategic hydration, and a deep understanding of equine physiology. The sport has a long history in the Arabian Peninsula, reflecting the region’s nomadic traditions and the importance of the horse in its culture.

Growing Participation and Regional Significance

The substantial number of participants in both the Al Zubarah International Cup and the preceding Al Wasmi Race underscores the increasing popularity of equestrian sports in Qatar. The Al Wasmi Race, held earlier in the season, saw 66 riders compete over a similar 100km distance. This growth is attributed to the QERC’s efforts to promote the sport and provide accessible training opportunities.

However, the success of these events also reflects Qatar’s broader strategy to become a hub for international sporting competitions. The nation has invested heavily in world-class facilities and infrastructure, attracting events across a range of disciplines, including football, track and field, and now, equestrian sports. This investment aims to diversify the economy and enhance Qatar’s global profile.

The Al Zubarah International Cup is expected to draw fierce competition, with riders vying for top honors and valuable ranking points. The challenging desert terrain of Sealine, combined with the demanding distance, will undoubtedly test the limits of both horse and rider. Competitors will need to demonstrate exceptional horsemanship and strategic planning to succeed.

The QERC has emphasized the importance of horse welfare throughout the event. Veterinary inspections are crucial, and ongoing monitoring will be conducted during the race to ensure the animals are not subjected to undue stress. This commitment aligns with international standards for horse racing and reflects a responsible approach to the sport.

Looking ahead, the QERC will continue to host events throughout the 2025-2026 season. The performance of Qatari riders at the Al Zubarah International Cup will be closely watched as an indicator of the nation’s progress in equestrianism. Future events and potential bids to host larger international championships remain possibilities, contingent on ongoing funding and the continued success of local competitions.

The final rider list and detailed race schedule are available on the QERC website: https://qerc.qa/. Organizers anticipate a full report on the race results will be published shortly after the event concludes on Friday.
