Doha, Qatar – The QatarDebate Center (QDC) is hosting the final rounds of the 7th International Arabic School Debating Championship this week, bringing together 16 teams from 35 countries to compete in the prestigious event. The championship, a key initiative of Qatar Foundation, aims to foster a culture of dialogue and elevate the presence of the Arabic language on the global stage. Final competitions begin Friday and will continue through January 11th.

The competition, which began with preliminary rounds in May 2025, showcases the skills of young debaters tackling contemporary issues. This year’s event features a hybrid format, combining in-person participation with remote monitoring to maximize accessibility and diversity. The QDC anticipates a strong display of critical thinking and communication skills from the participating students.

Promoting Arabic Language Skills Through Debate

The International Arabic School Debating Championship is designed to cultivate essential skills beyond linguistic proficiency. According to the QDC, the competition focuses on building character, enhancing analytical abilities, and promoting responsible dialogue. This emphasis on holistic development distinguishes the championship from traditional academic contests.

Competition Structure and Judging

The open category of the championship is divided into two groups, with teams progressing through five qualifying rounds. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, culminating in a final round to determine the overall champion. A separate category caters to non-native Arabic speakers, further demonstrating the tournament’s inclusive approach.

Judging the debates is a panel of 24 international and local experts, selected from a pool of over 100 applicants. The rigorous selection process, involving QDC trainers, ambassadors, and members of the Elite Academy, ensures fairness and transparency. This commitment to impartial evaluation is crucial for maintaining the championship’s credibility.

The topics debated are expected to cover a wide range of current and contemporary issues, encouraging students to analyze complex problems from multiple perspectives. Participants are judged on the strength of their arguments, their ability to engage in constructive dialogue, and their adherence to principles of critical and logical thinking. The Peninsula Qatar reports that the event aims to prepare a generation capable of shaping the future.

Additionally, the championship serves as a platform for cultural exchange, bringing together students from diverse backgrounds. This interaction fosters understanding and respect, contributing to a more interconnected global community. The QDC believes that such initiatives are vital for promoting peaceful coexistence and collaboration.

Expanding the Reach of Arabic

The championship’s significance extends beyond the immediate competition. It actively promotes the Arabic language, challenging the perception that it is solely a language of religion or tradition. By showcasing the language’s versatility and intellectual rigor, the QDC hopes to encourage wider adoption and appreciation. This effort aligns with Qatar’s broader strategy to promote Arabic culture and heritage internationally.

Meanwhile, the event also contributes to the development of crucial communication skills, such as public speaking, argumentation, and active listening. These skills are highly valued in various professional fields, equipping participants with a competitive edge in the global job market. The QDC views these skills as essential for success in the 21st century.

The QatarDebate Center encourages the public to follow the championship’s progress and the closing ceremony through its official social media channels. The tournament represents a unique opportunity to witness the power of dialogue and the potential of young people to address global challenges.

Looking ahead, the QDC will likely analyze feedback from this year’s championship to refine the competition format and expand its reach. Future editions may incorporate new technologies or address emerging global issues. The long-term impact of the championship on the promotion of Arabic language skills and the development of future leaders remains to be seen, but the QDC’s commitment to this initiative is unwavering.
