Qatar’s firm commitment to protecting education as a fundamental human right was reiterated in a speech delivered by Minister of State for International Cooperation HE Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater. She emphasized that education is crucial for a better world and should be prioritized in humanitarian responses, as it is as essential as food and medicine during times of crisis. The international community must ensure that educational facilities are protected to allow students to continue their studies safely. Despite ongoing attacks on education, Qatar remains dedicated to providing quality education for all, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Qatar has actively promoted the global education agenda through various platforms, including the UN General Assembly, UNESCO, and the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The country was among the first to sign the Safe Schools Declaration and continues to support it strongly. Efforts are not limited to accessible areas, as Qatar reaches remote conflict-affected regions, achieving significant progress through initiatives like the Education Above All Foundation, founded by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. The EAA, in collaboration with international organizations, has provided quality education to over 19 million children and youth in conflict zones around the world.

The Minister highlighted the importance of protecting education from attacks, citing alarming statistics from the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack. The increase in attacks on education facilities and individuals poses a grave threat to children’s right to education and future opportunities. In Gaza, for example, schools have been destroyed, teachers killed, and countless students deprived of education due to Israeli aggression. These deliberate attacks on education violate international law and must be condemned and addressed to prevent further harm to students and teachers.

In Sudan, violent attacks on schools have quadrupled since the conflict began, leading to the closure of more than 10,000 schools in affected regions. The ongoing conflict has disrupted the education of 19 million children, exacerbating economic instability and hunger. Similarly, in Ukraine, the education system has suffered significant damage, with schools and universities targeted and children displaced or killed. The destruction of infrastructure has created fear and uncertainty for Ukrainian children and highlighted the urgent need to protect education during conflicts.

The International Day to Protect Education from Attack serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding, respecting, and promoting the right to education, even in times of armed conflict. It is not just a day of celebration but a call to action for all countries to prioritize education and prevent further attacks on educational facilities and individuals. The sacrifices made by teachers who continue to educate children despite the risks they face should be honored and remembered as a beacon for future generations. The protection of education is essential for building a peaceful and prosperous world.
