The Ministry of Municipality announced that Qatar has seen a significant increase in local food production over the past five years, thanks to state efforts to boost self-sufficiency and food security in the country. Minister of Municipality H E Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah revealed that there has been a production boom in terms of cultivated areas, quantity, and production, leading to a 98% increase in fresh vegetable production. The country has achieved self-sufficiency in the livestock production sector, reaching 100% in fresh milk and poultry. Qatar also pays attention to fish production and is working on development programs for this sector.

The meeting of the Agricultural Cooperation and Food Security Committee of GCC countries was chaired by Qatar in Doha, where Minister of Municipality H E Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah highlighted the importance of food security and the efforts being made to sustain it. The new National Food Security Strategy is set to be launched soon in accordance with the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030. The main objectives of the strategy include achieving sustainability and relying on modern technologies and innovation in the agricultural sector to support Qatar National Vision 2030.

During the meeting, various topics were discussed, including the food security strategy, laws on organic inputs and products, regulations on fertilizers and agricultural soil improvers, genetic resources for food and agriculture, and more. The Minister stressed the importance of enhancing self-sufficiency and ensuring the sustainability of food resources, especially in the face of challenges like climate change, population growth, and global market fluctuations. It was emphasized that adopting policies that support sustainable agriculture, promoting investments in the local sector, and utilizing modern technologies are crucial for increasing production and reducing resource consumption.

The Minister noted the progress made in food security in the GCC countries in recent years, highlighting the joint efforts among member states to enhance cooperation and transform national food systems into healthy, sustainable systems. It was emphasized that cooperation between GCC countries is essential for achieving food security goals and building resilient food systems capable of withstanding crises. The meeting also involved discussions on following up on previous decisions and cooperation with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) to further enhance food security efforts in the region.

In conclusion, the efforts made by Qatar to increase local food production and ensure food security are commendable. The country’s focus on sustainable agriculture, innovative technologies, and regional cooperation are vital for achieving long-term food security goals. By continuing to invest in the agricultural sector and adopting comprehensive strategies, Qatar and other GCC countries can strengthen their food systems and overcome challenges posed by external factors. Collaborative efforts and a shared commitment to food security will be essential for building resilient food systems in the region.
