Qatar National Library January Events: A Focus on Learning and Community

The library’s January offerings are designed to appeal to a broad audience, from high school students navigating their future to adults seeking personal enrichment. QNL consistently provides resources and programs that extend beyond traditional library services, actively contributing to Qatar’s educational and cultural landscape. These events build upon the library’s existing role as a vital community resource.

Career Mentorship with the Murshidi Programme

The popular Murshidi Programme returns on January 10, 17, and 24, connecting students and recent graduates with experienced mentors. These mentors are drawn from Education City, its extensive alumni network, and prominent institutions throughout Qatar. The program offers personalized guidance on academic pursuits, scholarship applications, and career planning, providing valuable insights for those transitioning into the professional world.

Cultivating Hobbies and Social Connections

QNL will also host regular community meetups throughout January, providing opportunities for social interaction and skill-sharing. Weekly Chess meetups and Knitting and Crochet gatherings will take place every Thursday, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging participants to pursue their interests. These informal gatherings are open to all skill levels and ages, promoting inclusivity and lifelong learning.

Exploring Qatar’s Past and Present

A lecture and workshop series, “Qatar Contemporary History,” will be held on January 10 and 11, led by Professor Abdullah Baabood of Waseda University in Tokyo and moderated by historian Jassim Alshamari. The lecture will provide an analytical overview of Qatar’s recent history, examining key political, social, and cultural shifts. The accompanying workshop will offer a practical introduction to the methods of historical analysis, specifically within the context of the Gulf region.

Literary Discussions and Artistic Performances

On January 26, the Book Chat series will feature a discussion of “Wonder and Loss: A Practical Memoir for Writing about Grief” by Sam Meekings. This event will explore the therapeutic power of storytelling and how writing can aid in processing grief and preserving memories. Additionally, a unique musical performance, “The Invisible Touch — A Theremin’s Journey Through Time,” is scheduled for January 28, showcasing the distinctive sound of the theremin alongside traditional instruments.

Gardening Workshop and Community Building

The month concludes with a workshop on January 31, launching the Library’s new Chat and Plant Community. Led by permaculture specialist Amal Rihan, “Basics of Gardening for Beginners” will introduce participants to fundamental gardening techniques and encourage knowledge exchange. This initiative aims to connect individuals with a shared interest in gardening and promote sustainable practices, adding to the library’s growing list of community-focused programs.

Looking ahead, QNL plans to continue expanding its program offerings throughout 2024, with a focus on digital literacy and emerging technologies. The library’s success will likely depend on its ability to adapt to evolving community needs and maintain its position as a leading cultural institution in Qatar. Future schedules and specific event details will be announced on the Qatar National Library website.
