Qatar National Library has unveiled a new mascot named Ramly, inspired by Qatar’s desert fox, to revitalize its Children’s Library. Ramly is a friendly and curious character who enjoys making friends, reading books, and embarking on adventures with children. The introduction of Ramly aims to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages young readers to engage in early childhood education and literacy development.

During the launch event at the QNL Children’s Library, over 300 children aged four to 11 had the opportunity to meet Ramly. The event featured interactive activities such as colouring, face painting, hand puppet crafting, and story writing workshops, designed to foster a sense of community and belonging among children. By introducing a friendly mascot like Ramly, the library staff aims to build positive relationships with youth and increase attendance and participation in library programs.

Research by the American Library Association has demonstrated that mascots can effectively engage children, leading to increased attendance and participation in library programs, particularly among children and families. Abeer Al Kuwari, Director of Research and Learning Services at Qatar National Library, expressed the library’s commitment to promoting a love of reading among youth through targeted programs starting with its youngest visitors. Ramly, inspired by Qatar’s natural environment, serves as a valuable tool in encouraging early literacy and enhancing the library’s role as a hub for community engagement and learning.

The launch of Ramly will support initiatives such as storytelling sessions and reading clubs tailored for children, allowing young readers to take ownership of the library’s resources and programs. By incorporating the mascot into children-oriented events, QNL aims to instill a sense of belonging and foster a love for reading among its young visitors. Ramly is not only a mascot but also a key component of the library’s mission to promote early literacy and create an inclusive and dynamic community space for children, young adults, and families to nurture their love of reading.
