Qatar Museums (QM) recently announced their Annual Intervention, a public art open call for mid-career artists residing in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The open call invites artists, both nationals and non-nationals, to submit visionary proposals that bring life to communal spaces through site-specific and community-specific public artworks. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life within communities through the principles of placemaking, transforming everyday spaces into extraordinary ones.

Through the Annual Intervention, Qatar Museums seeks to inspire joy, connection, and meaning in urban spaces, enriching the cultural landscape of Qatar. Abdulrahman Al Ishaq, Director of Public Art at Qatar Museums, emphasized the importance of nurturing talents and raising awareness of public art through these yearly open calls. The platform provided for artists allows them to express their creativity and become a part of the regional cultural story by showcasing their artistic vision through public artworks.

To be considered for the Annual Intervention, artists must meet specific criteria, including being mid-career artists capable of effectively carrying out their proposed projects. Applicants must be residents of the GCC region with a valid residence permit, and the proposed project should be produced locally or regionally. Additionally, the project should involve the community or be tailored to a specific site. Only complete applications containing all requested information will be considered for this opportunity.

In the past, Qatar Museums has commissioned projects such as Shelter by Marco Bruno and Michael Perrone, and Dar Al Tayor by Bachir Mohamad, showcasing the diverse and innovative public artworks that can result from the Annual Intervention. The open call deadline for proposals is July 15, 2024, providing artists with an opportunity to contribute to the cultural history of the region and create impactful public artworks that engage and inspire communities.

The Annual Intervention by Qatar Museums serves as a platform for artists to explore their creativity, express themselves through art, and contribute to the cultural heritage of the GCC region. By encouraging artists to propose public artworks that are site-specific and community-specific, Qatar Museums aims to enrich the urban fabric of Qatar, inspiring everyday spaces with joy, connection, and meaning. This initiative reflects the commitment of Qatar Museums to supporting and promoting public art within the region, providing mid-career artists with a platform to showcase their talent and contribute to the cultural landscape of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

In conclusion, the Annual Intervention by Qatar Museums offers mid-career artists residing in the GCC countries the opportunity to create visionary public artworks that enhance communal spaces and enrich the cultural fabric of the region. Through the principles of placemaking and community engagement, artists are encouraged to transform everyday spaces into extraordinary ones, inspiring joy, connection, and meaning within urban environments. By providing a platform for artists to express their creativity and talent, Qatar Museums aims to raise awareness of public art and nurture emerging talents, while contributing to the regional cultural story and history. Don’t miss the chance to submit your proposal and become a part of this exciting initiative!
