Qatar Museums (QM) has announced its Annual Intervention public art open call, inviting mid-career artists from GCC countries to submit visionary proposals that enhance communal spaces. The initiative encourages artists to create site-specific artworks that incorporate the principles of placemaking, with a maximum budget of QR150,000 provided for each selected project. This opportunity aims to transform everyday spaces into extraordinary places, enriching the urban fabric of Qatar.

Abdulrahman Al Ishaq, Director of Public Art at Qatar Museums, highlights the importance of raising awareness of public art and nurturing artistic talents through open calls like the Annual Intervention. By providing a platform for artists to showcase their creativity and contribute to the regional cultural story, QM is actively supporting the development of the arts scene in the GCC region. Artists participating in the open call must be mid-career individuals residing in the GCC with a valid residence permit, and their proposed projects should involve the community or be tailored to a specific site.

The selection criteria for the Annual Intervention includes the artist’s ability to effectively carry out the proposed project, the requirement for the project to be produced locally or regionally, and the necessity for community involvement in the artwork. Incomplete applications will not be considered, so artists are encouraged to submit all requested information before the deadline of July 15, 2024. Past commissions from the Annual Intervention include Shelter by Marco Bruno and Michael Perrone, as well as Dar Al Tayor by Bachir Mohamad, showcasing the diversity and creativity of public art in Qatar.

The Annual Intervention open call provides a unique opportunity for artists to bring joy, connection, and meaning to everyday spaces in Qatar, inspiring both residents and visitors alike. The public artworks created through this initiative aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals within the community, contributing to a vibrant cultural landscape in the region. By encouraging artists to express themselves through art and become a part of Qatar’s cultural history, Qatar Museums is fostering creativity and innovation in the arts sector.

In conclusion, the Annual Intervention public art open call by Qatar Museums offers mid-career artists in the GCC region a platform to showcase their creativity and contribute to the cultural fabric of Qatar. By supporting artists in creating site-specific artworks that enhance communal spaces, QM aims to inspire joy, connection, and meaning in everyday environments. The selected artists will receive financial support and recognition for their creative efforts, further encouraging the growth and development of the arts scene in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Artists are encouraged to submit their proposals before the deadline to be considered for this exciting opportunity.
