The State of Qatar recently participated in the Second Regional Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration in the Arab Region, held at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo. HE Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al Thani represented Qatar at the meeting, emphasizing the importance of addressing migration challenges in the region. Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit highlighted the significance of migration in shaping the social and economic reality of the Arab region, noting the increasing challenges faced by migrants and refugees.

Aboul-Gheit pointed out that the Arab region is home to an estimated 41.4 million migrants and refugees, with around 32.8 million originating from the region. The severity of challenges facing the Arab region has increased in the last two decades, impacting political, social, and economic aspects of life. He also highlighted the risks associated with irregular migration, including human trafficking by smugglers. Additionally, climate change has become a major driver of human mobility in the region, exacerbating existing challenges.

The Arab League is closely monitoring the difficulties faced by Arab immigrants abroad, including racist practices, discrimination, Islamophobia, and marginalization. Aboul-Gheit emphasized the need for the international community to address the root causes of migration and displacement, particularly in conflict-affected areas such as the Gaza Strip. He called for decisive measures to protect the Palestinian people and stop forced displacement and ethnic cleansing.

Aboul-Gheit stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation between actors in the humanitarian and development fields to address negative structural factors that compel people to leave their country of origin. By linking migration and development, it is possible to create sustainable solutions that address the root causes of migration. The Arab League remains committed to addressing the challenges associated with migration in the region and working towards a safe, orderly, and regular migration system.

In conclusion, the Second Regional Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration in the Arab Region highlighted the growing importance of addressing migration challenges in the region. Through cooperation and collective action, it is possible to address the root causes of migration, protect the rights of migrants and refugees, and ensure a more sustainable future for all. The State of Qatar’s participation in the conference underscores its commitment to addressing migration issues in the Arab region and working towards a more inclusive and just society for all.
