The State of Qatar has been actively participating in various meetings of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to enhance cooperation in the fields of education, culture, judicial aspects, and alternative dispute resolution related to intellectual property. The partnership between Qatar and WIPO has led to the development of a national strategy for intellectual property to align with Qatar’s national vision. Various memoranda of understanding have been signed between the two parties to promote the use of intellectual property in business strategies, enhance human resources in the field, and provide alternative means of settling disputes in intellectual property.

Qatar’s focus on sports, especially in preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2022, has led to increased cooperation with WIPO to leverage intellectual property in the sports sector. The State of Qatar aims to strengthen the link between intellectual property and sports to benefit from the legacy of major sporting events like the World Cup. Additionally, Qatar hosted the International Mediation and Arbitration Conference in 2024, in partnership with WIPO, to facilitate knowledge exchange and cooperation among intellectual property and mediation experts.

The upcoming second edition of the International Mediation and Arbitration Conference in 2025 at the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) level will address emerging challenges in the region regarding intellectual property mediation and arbitration. Qatar’s active participation in WIPO committees and conferences, such as the recent Diplomatic Conference on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Traditional Knowledge, showcases its commitment to international agreements and legal frameworks for intellectual property rights.

Qatar’s ongoing support for initiatives like the Design Law Treaty (DLT) aims to simplify global systems for protecting industrial designs and promoting easier access for designers to local and foreign markets. The State of Qatar also advocates for multilateral agreements to protect the broadcasting rights of organizations internationally. Qatar’s presidency of several WIPO committees demonstrates its commitment to advancing intellectual property protection and cooperation within the organization.

The State of Qatar’s collaboration with WIPO is not limited to official meetings and conferences but extends to hosting events and welcoming WIPO officials for discussions and exchanges. The country’s efforts to promote innovation, research, and development through initiatives like the Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation Strategy 2030 have contributed to significant advancements in global innovation rankings. Overall, Qatar’s partnership with WIPO reflects its commitment to enhancing intellectual property protection, innovation, and cooperation on an international scale.
