The European Union’s role in the ongoing war in Ukraine was the central focus of the latest episode of Euronews’ debate show, “The Ring,” which aired December 3, 2025. MEPs Cynthia Ní Mhurchú and Cristian Terheș, representing opposing political viewpoints, engaged in a discussion about the EU’s strategy, particularly regarding defense capabilities and diplomatic efforts. The debate highlighted differing perspectives on whether the EU has done enough to support Ukraine and deter further Russian aggression, and the future of EU foreign policy.

The episode, filmed at the European Parliament in Brussels, featured Ní Mhurchú of Renew Europe and Terheș of the European Conservative and Reformist Group (ECR). Despite their significant political differences, both acknowledged the EU’s importance in resolving the conflict, though they disagreed on the approach needed to achieve that goal. The discussion offered insight into the internal European considerations surrounding the war.

Strengthening EU Foreign Policy: A Debate on Defense and Diplomacy

Cristian Terheș argued strongly for a rapid increase in the EU’s defense spending and overall military preparedness. He posited that a strong, projecting power would discourage Russia from escalating the conflict, drawing an analogy of Russia to a bear that attacks weakness. This urgency stems from a belief that a more robust defense posture was needed earlier in the crisis to prevent the current situation.

However, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú countered this assessment, firmly defending the EU’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives, headed by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. While acknowledging the need for continued support to Ukraine, Ní Mhurchú stressed the value of discreet negotiation and emphasized that Kallas’s effectiveness should not be judged solely on public appearances. Her comments reflect a more cautious approach prioritizing negotiation.

The Role of Deterrence

Terheș explicitly advocated for a policy of deterrence through strength, suggesting that Russia respects only displays of power. He criticized what he perceived as a slow response from the EU, implying a missed opportunity to prevent the invasion through early military preparations. According to Terheș, a more assertive EU could have altered Russia’s cost-benefit analysis.

Ní Mhurchú did not directly dispute the importance of defense, but instead highlighted the effectiveness of the sanctions imposed by the EU on Russia. These economic measures, implemented in phases, aimed to curtail Russia’s ability to finance the war and pressure the Kremlin into a negotiated settlement. She believes a continuation of these measures, coupled with ongoing diplomatic engagement, is the most effective path forward.

Ukraine Aid and Future Support

The MEPs also touched upon the ongoing debate regarding the level and type of aid provided to Ukraine. Both agreed on the necessity of continued assistance, yet differed on priorities. The discussion underscored the complex challenges facing the EU as it attempts to balance support for Ukraine, internal economic concerns, and the need for a cohesive European security strategy.

Recently, the EU has been grappling with internal disagreements over the allocation of further financial aid packages to Ukraine, with some member states expressing reservations about the long-term financial implications. These debates are occurring against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical dynamics and the evolving nature of the conflict. Sanctions against Russia remain a key component of the EU’s response.

The debate also briefly touched on the broader implications of the war for EU defense integration. The conflict has spurred renewed discussions about the need for greater coordination and investment in European military capabilities, with some advocating for the creation of a more unified EU army. This remains a contentious issue, with differing views among member states regarding sovereignty and strategic autonomy.

“The Ring” is produced by a team including Méabh Mc Mahon (anchor), Luis Albertos Altarejos, Nikos Michos, and Amaia Echevarria, with editing by Zacharia Vigneron. Viewers interested in contributing to the conversation can reach the production team at [email protected].

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the EU’s ability to formulate a unified and effective foreign policy will be crucial. Expect further debate among member states regarding defense spending, sanctions, and the future of relations with Russia. Keep an eye on Euronews for upcoming episodes of “The Ring” as they tackle these and other important European issues.
