Oman is taking a significant leap forward in its space ambitions with the announcement of a national programme to develop and assemble a “CubeSat” satellite. Spearheaded by Oman Lens, a leading Omani company in satellite technology, this initiative, unveiled during the Middle East Space Conference 2026, aims to cultivate a robust national capability in the space sector, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) applications for space-based assets. This programme isn’t just about building a satellite; it’s about building a future for Oman as a regional hub for innovation and advanced technology.

Oman Lens Launches National CubeSat Programme

The newly launched programme represents a cornerstone of Oman’s National Space Programme, overseen by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. It directly addresses the nation’s objectives to localize space technologies and establish a lasting foundation of knowledge within the country. Oman Lens’s commitment extends beyond simply acquiring technology; it’s about empowering Omani talent to create and operate it.

Focus on Skill Development and Knowledge Transfer

A key element of the programme is its dedication to education and practical training. It will empower a select cohort of Omani students, academics, and engineers, providing them with hands-on experience in all facets of satellite development. From the initial design phases and meticulous assembly to rigorous testing and eventual operation, participants will gain invaluable expertise in Earth observation and remote sensing. This immersive approach ensures a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals for Oman’s growing space industry.

CubeSat Mission Objectives and Applications

The CubeSat satellite itself will be equipped with advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, enhancing its capabilities and broadening its potential applications. Its primary missions will center around capturing high-resolution space imagery and processing that data for a variety of crucial purposes. This includes supporting urban and rural planning initiatives, monitoring environmental changes, and contributing to sustainable development projects across the Sultanate.

Ali Shah, CEO of Oman Lens, emphasized the programme’s strategic importance. “We are focused on empowering national capabilities in the satellite industry by leveraging the skills and expertise of Omani professionals across all our projects,” he stated. He highlighted the programme’s two-phase structure, designed to maximize learning and practical application.

Phase One: Domestic Assembly and Training

The first phase will take place entirely within Oman, providing a unique opportunity for students and academics from leading institutions – Sultan Qaboos University, the German University of Technology (GUtech), the Military Technological College, and the University of Technology and Applied Sciences – to assemble the satellite’s engineering model. This hands-on experience will be instrumental in building a foundational understanding of satellite construction and operation. It’s a crucial step in establishing local manufacturing capacity.

Phase Two: International Collaboration and Flight Model Assembly

Building on the knowledge gained in Phase One, selected participants will travel to China for an intensive training programme with Star.Vision, Oman Lens’s technical partner. This phase will focus on the assembly of the final flight model of the satellite within a specialized industrial environment. Participants will receive advanced training in launch testing procedures and the initial stages of satellite operation. This international collaboration is vital for knowledge transfer and ensuring the satellite meets the highest standards of performance.

Strengthening Oman’s Position in the Space Sector

This CubeSat programme is more than just a technological undertaking; it’s a strategic investment in Oman’s future. It directly supports Oman Vision 2040, a national plan aimed at diversifying the economy and fostering innovation. By developing a strong domestic capability in satellite development, Oman is positioning itself as a promising regional hub for space technologies and advanced knowledge industries.

Oman Lens has already demonstrated its commitment to this vision, having successfully launched the first Omani satellite enhanced with AI technologies in the region in November 2024. The company continues to prioritize the empowerment of Omani talent, actively seeking to involve academics and technicians in its ongoing projects. This latest initiative builds on that success and expands the scope of Oman’s space ambitions.

Furthermore, the programme fosters valuable international partnerships, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise. This collaborative approach is essential for navigating the complexities of the space sector and accelerating Oman’s progress. The focus on AI integration also sets Oman apart, demonstrating a commitment to cutting-edge technology.

Looking Ahead: A Future Powered by Space Technology

The launch of this national CubeSat programme marks a pivotal moment for Oman’s space sector. It signifies a shift from simply consuming space-based services to actively creating and owning them. The programme’s emphasis on education, practical training, and international collaboration will ensure a sustainable and thriving space industry for generations to come. Oman Lens’s dedication to AI in space is particularly noteworthy, promising innovative solutions for a wide range of challenges. This initiative is a testament to Oman’s forward-thinking vision and its commitment to becoming a leader in the regional space landscape.
