The Jeddah Book Fair 2025 commenced on Thursday at the Jeddah Superdome, marking a significant cultural event for Saudi Arabia. This year’s fair, running until December 20th and operating from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. daily (2:00 p.m. on Fridays), introduces a new element with the screening of Saudi films alongside its traditional focus on literature. The event, themed “Jeddah Reads,” aims to promote reading and celebrate Saudi creativity.

Over 1,000 publishing houses and agencies from 24 countries are participating, occupying approximately 400 booths. Organized by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission, the fair serves as a major platform for publishers, authors, and book lovers across the Kingdom and beyond.

Expanding Cultural Horizons at the Jeddah Book Fair

The inclusion of Saudi films at the Jeddah Book Fair represents a deliberate effort to broaden the scope of cultural expression showcased at the event. This initiative is supported by the Daw (light) for Film Support program and a partnership with the Film Commission, highlighting a growing synergy between the literary and cinematic arts within the country. The screenings will take place daily on the main stage, offering attendees a diverse range of entertainment options.

A Platform for Saudi Cinema

The move to feature films aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030, which prioritizes the development of a vibrant cultural sector. The Daw program, established to bolster the local film industry, provides funding and resources to Saudi filmmakers, and the book fair offers a valuable opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience. This support is intended to foster a more robust and internationally recognized Saudi film industry.

According to the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission, the fair reflects ongoing efforts to develop the publishing industry and support creative talent. CEO Dr. Abdullatif Al-Wasel emphasized the event’s role in enhancing the presence of Saudi publishers and writers both domestically and internationally. This commitment to local content is a recurring theme throughout the fair’s programming.

Beyond the film screenings, the Jeddah Book Fair boasts a comprehensive program of over 170 cultural events. These include seminars, panel discussions, lectures, poetry readings, and workshops designed to engage attendees of all ages and interests. The diverse range of activities aims to create a stimulating and enriching experience for all.

A dedicated children’s area is a key component of the fair, offering interactive programs that blend culture and entertainment. These initiatives are specifically designed to cultivate the creative skills of young people and foster a love of reading from an early age. The focus on youth development underscores the long-term vision of the event.

The fair also provides a platform for self-published Saudi authors through the Saudi Authors’ Corner. This allows them to directly present their work to the public and connect with potential readers. Book signing platforms further facilitate interaction between authors and fans, creating a more personal and engaging experience.

Skill Development and Industry Insights

Five specialized workshops are scheduled to run during the fair, covering essential skills for professionals in the media and publishing sectors. These workshops will focus on topics such as journalism techniques, digital crisis management, crafting children’s stories, personal branding strategies, and the crucial impact of early reading on cognitive and linguistic development. These sessions aim to provide practical knowledge and enhance professional capabilities.

Cultural organizations, community institutions, and universities are also actively participating in the Jeddah Book Fair, presenting their initiatives and latest publications. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of community and encourages the exchange of ideas and knowledge. The presence of these institutions adds another layer of depth to the event.

The increasing popularity of book fairs in Saudi Arabia reflects a growing national interest in literature and culture. Similar events, such as the Riyadh International Book Fair, have also seen significant attendance and participation in recent years. This trend suggests a broader societal shift towards valuing intellectual pursuits and creative expression. The Kingdom has been investing heavily in cultural infrastructure and initiatives as part of its Vision 2030 plan.

The inclusion of film alongside traditional publishing at this year’s Jeddah Book Fair is a notable development in the Kingdom’s cultural landscape. It signals a willingness to embrace new forms of storytelling and to foster collaboration between different creative industries. The success of this integration will likely influence future iterations of the event.

As the fair progresses, organizers will be assessing the impact of the film screenings and the overall effectiveness of the expanded program. Future plans for the event, including potential dates and themes for the next iteration, are expected to be announced in the coming months. The continued growth and evolution of the Jeddah Book Fair will be a key indicator of the Kingdom’s progress in developing a thriving cultural ecosystem. The long-term effects of this year’s changes on attendance and industry engagement remain to be seen.

The Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission is also expected to release data on book sales and publishing contracts generated during the fair, providing valuable insights into the economic impact of the event. Monitoring these metrics will be crucial for evaluating the fair’s contribution to the growth of the Saudi publishing industry and the broader cultural economy.
