Pixel 10 Pro Fold review: Google’s bet to make foldables sturdy

The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold has been released, and while it doesn’t look much different from its predecessor, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, it has some key upgrades that make it more durable and long-lasting. The device features a new gearless hinge, which adds resistance to folding and unfolding, and has received an IP68 rating, indicating improved protection against dust and water.

Durability has been a major concern for users of foldable phones, and Google has addressed this issue with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The phone’s new hinge ensures that there is very little gap when it is folded, reducing the risk of dust particles and debris getting inside and potentially damaging the screen. The IP68 rating also provides peace of mind for users who may be concerned about accidental exposure to water or dust.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold Camera

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a camera setup similar to last year’s device, with a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 10.8-megapixel telephoto sensor with 5x optical zoom, and a 10.5-megapixel ultrawide sensor. However, the camera performance is not on par with the Pixel 10 Pro, which has a 50-megapixel main sensor and a pair of 48-megapixel sensors for ultrawide and telephoto. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s camera is still capable of taking good photos, but it may not be as impressive as other flagship devices.

One issue with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s camera is that it sometimes triggers macro mode when taking photos of small objects, even when they are not extremely close. This can be frustrating for users who want more control over their camera settings. Additionally, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold does not have the AI Zoom feature, which is available on other Pixel devices.

The Confusing “Pro” Moniker

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s naming convention has raised some eyebrows, as it is not entirely clear why it is labeled as a “Pro” device. While it has some premium features, such as a larger battery and improved durability, it falls short in some areas, such as camera performance and charging capabilities, compared to other Pixel 10 Pro devices. The phone’s vapor chamber cooling is also not on par with the Pixel 10 Pro slab phones.

To make the Pixel 10 Pro Fold more competitive, Google could consider implementing features like Samsung’s multi-window mode, which would enhance the overall multitasking experience. Encouraging developers to optimize their apps for the foldable form factor would also be beneficial.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is priced at $1,799, which is $200 less than Samsung’s Z Fold 7. While it may not be the thinnest or most camera-capable foldable on the market, it offers a unique blend of durability and Google’s proprietary software features. As the foldable market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Google refines its approach and addresses user concerns.
