At just 16 years old, Lamine Yamal is already making waves in the world of soccer. The Spanish wunderkind has been gaining attention for his exceptional talent, with many comparing him to the greats of the game. The youngest player to have ever played for Spain, Yamal made history by becoming the youngest player in the ongoing European Championship in Germany. His promising career is already drawing parallels to that of Lionel Messi, one of the greatest soccer players of all time.

Yamal’s connection to Messi goes back to a charity calendar photo shoot in 2007, when he was just a few months old. The photos from the shoot, which recently resurfaced, show Messi holding a baby Lamine alongside his family. The photo shoot took place in the visitors’ locker room at Barcelona’s Camp Nou as part of a charity drive by local newspaper Diario Sport and UNICEF. Yamal’s family won a raffle organized by UNICEF to have their picture taken with a Barcelona player, and they ended up being paired with Messi.

Joan Monfort, the photographer behind the iconic images, recalled the challenges of working with a young Messi and baby Lamine during the shoot. Messi, who was already a talented player on the brink of stardom, was initially unsure how to interact with the baby. Despite the initial awkwardness, the photos captured a special moment between the two, foreshadowing the bright futures that lay ahead for both Messi and Yamal.

Yamal’s impressive performances at Euro 2024 have further solidified his status as a rising star in the world of soccer. Playing for Spain, he has been one of the team’s standout players, showcasing his skills on the field and winning over fans and critics alike. As Spain prepares to face France in the semifinals, all eyes will be on Yamal to see if he can continue his impressive form and help lead his team to victory.

For Monfort, the rediscovery of the photos from the 2007 shoot has brought a new level of excitement to his long career as a sports photographer. The unexpected connection between Messi and Yamal in the photos has captured the attention of soccer fans around the world, creating a buzz that Monfort has never experienced before. As he reflects on the significance of the photos and their impact, Monfort acknowledges the special feeling of being associated with something that has resonated so deeply with people.
