Oman is rapidly transforming its trade and regulatory landscape through ambitious digital initiatives. The Directorate General of Customs has emerged as a leader in this transformation, with its groundbreaking one-stop electronic permit system significantly boosting Oman customs clearance efficiency. In 2025 alone, the system processed over 140,000 permits, some in a remarkable 16 seconds, demonstrating a commitment to streamlining processes for businesses and citizens.

Revolutionizing Trade with Oman’s One-Stop Permit System

The achievement was prominently highlighted during this year’s World Customs Day, themed “Customs protects society through vigilance and commitment.” This underscores how Oman is leveraging digital integration across government entities to modernize its logistics and regulatory environment. Brigadier Said bin Khamis Al Ghaithi, Director General of Customs, emphasized that this isn’t just about speed; it’s about creating a secure and efficient system that supports economic growth.

The Bayan Platform: A Central Hub for Efficiency

The one-stop station is a core component of the broader Bayan platform. This platform strategically connects Oman’s customs authorities with numerous other government agencies. This interconnectedness allows for the complete electronic processing of permits, sophisticated risk management, and thorough post-clearance audits. The result is a significantly reduced administrative burden for traders and a more streamlined flow of goods.

Brig. Al Ghaithi explained that the primary goal is to ensure that compliance with regulations doesn’t hinder trade. Simultaneously, the system maintains stringent controls to prevent the entry of prohibited goods into the country. He firmly stated that digital transformation is no longer a choice but a vital strategic enabler for both national security and sustained economic development.

Impressive Statistics: Demonstrating Real-World Impact

The impact of these digital advancements is clearly reflected in the numbers. In addition to the 140,000+ one-stop permits issued, the Directorate processed over 1.29 million customs declarations in 2025. This demonstrates the ability to handle high volumes of transactions while maintaining a high level of control and accuracy. This level of efficiency in trade facilitation is crucial for Oman’s economic ambitions.

AI-Powered Security and Smuggling Detection

Furthermore, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into customs valuation and risk management has proven highly effective. Customs officers were able to detect over 1,000 cases of smuggling or prohibited imports, representing a 10% increase compared to 2024. This showcases the power of AI in enhancing security measures and protecting society from illicit activities.

Supporting Oman’s Economic Diversification

The one-stop initiative directly supports Oman’s broader economic diversification goals, as outlined in Vision 2040. By reducing administrative friction for businesses, the system attracts foreign investment and accelerates the movement of goods across borders. This creates a more competitive business environment and fosters economic growth.

Additionally, the streamlined processes encourage greater participation in international trade, opening up new opportunities for Omani businesses. The ease of doing business is a key factor in attracting investment and promoting economic diversification.

Investing in National Talent and Public Support

Recognizing that technology is only as effective as the people who manage it, the Directorate is heavily invested in building national talent. Programs are in place to equip Omani citizens with the skills needed to manage and maintain these advanced digital systems. This commitment to human capital development ensures the long-term sustainability of the digital transformation.

Alongside this, the Directorate is actively engaging with the public through awareness campaigns. A 24-hour toll-free call centre (80080022) is available to provide assistance to traders and passengers, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the new system. This proactive approach to customer service demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Oman Customs Clearance

The success of Oman’s one-stop electronic permit system is a testament to the power of digital transformation in modernizing government services. The impressive statistics – over 140,000 permits issued, 1.29 million customs declarations processed, and a 10% increase in smuggling detection – demonstrate the tangible benefits of this initiative. As Oman continues to invest in technology and talent, we can expect even greater efficiency and security in Oman customs clearance processes. For more information on customs procedures and regulations, traders are encouraged to visit the Directorate General of Customs website or contact the 24-hour call centre. This commitment to innovation positions Oman as a regional leader in trade facilitation and economic development.
