The Sultanate of Oman recently participated in the 3rd Arab Forum for Equality in Cairo, which focused on addressing inequalities during times of crises. The forum, organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), sought to involve policymakers, decision-makers, and civil society organizations in finding solutions to the lack of equality in the Arab region. Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development, led Oman’s delegation at the forum.

The forum highlighted the importance of identifying the links between inequality and multiple crises and reviewing best practices from regions that have successfully reduced inequalities during crises. Participants also discussed the development of long-term policies to confront crisis risks and ensure stability. Additionally, the tenth meeting of ESCWA’s Expert Group on Social Protection Reform in the Arab region was held during the forum, where member countries shared their progress in developing comprehensive social protection systems.

Representatives from various countries provided insights into their experiences, challenges, and best practices in developing country profile reports for their social protection systems. The forum aimed to create a platform for sharing knowledge and expertise to tackle inequalities and crises effectively in the Arab region. By bringing together specialists and decision-makers, the forum provided a space for collaborative solutions and policy development to address these pressing issues.

The participation of Oman in the Arab Forum for Equality demonstrates the country’s commitment to addressing social inequalities and promoting inclusive and just societies. By engaging with other Arab countries and international organizations, Oman is able to learn from best practices and experiences to enhance its own social protection systems during times of crises. The forum serves as a valuable platform for networking, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration among countries in the region to tackle common challenges related to inequality and crisis management.

Overall, the 3rd Arab Forum for Equality in Cairo was a successful event that brought together key stakeholders in the region to discuss and strategize on ways to address inequalities during times of crises. The forum’s focus on long-term policies, best practices, and social protection reform highlights the importance of proactive measures to ensure stability and inclusivity in society. By participating in such forums, countries like Oman can strengthen their social development efforts and contribute to building more peaceful, just, and inclusive societies in the Arab region.
