The Sultanate of Oman will be participating in the first joint summit between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and the European Union (EU) in Brussels. The delegation from Oman will be headed by HH Sayyid Asa’ad bin Tarik Al Said, representing His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. The summit aims to strengthen cooperation between the two sides amidst common global challenges and to bolster economic ties, with discussions revolving around trade, investment, energy, sustainability, and climate issues. There will also be talks on enhancing people-to-people ties, easing visa procedures, and addressing geopolitical challenges in the Middle East and the conflict in Ukraine.

GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Al Budaiwi emphasized the strategic and historical partnership between the GCC and the EU, highlighting their shared perspectives on various regional and global matters. Oman’s Ambassador to Belgium, Ru’aa Issa Al Zadjali, described the summit as a significant step towards a strategic partnership, emphasizing the commitment of both sides to enhance bilateral relations in light of increasing regional and international challenges. Luigi Di Maio, the EU Special Representative for the Gulf region, expressed gratitude to Oman for hosting previous meetings of the GCC-EU Ministerial Council in 2023, which laid the groundwork for the upcoming summit.

Economic, trade, and investment relations between the GCC and the EU have been on a growth trajectory, with the volume of commercial exchange reaching $204.3 billion in 2022. This figure accounted for 13.2% of the total trade volume in goods entering the Gulf region, as reported by the GCC Statistical Centre. The summit in Brussels aims to build on this positive momentum and explore ways to further deepen and diversify economic cooperation between the two regions. Discussions will also focus on joint efforts to address pressing global issues such as climate change and sustainability, reflecting the shared commitment of the GCC and the EU towards tackling common challenges.

The upcoming GCC-EU Summit signifies a significant milestone in the relationship between the Gulf states and the European Union, as it will be the first time that leaders from both regions come together on a shared platform. The summit is expected to pave the way for increased collaboration and partnership on a wide range of issues, from economic and trade matters to regional security and geopolitical challenges. By fostering closer ties and mutual understanding, the GCC and the EU aim to strengthen their cooperation and contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond.

In conclusion, the participation of Oman in the GCC-EU Summit underscores the country’s commitment to advancing regional and international cooperation. By engaging with key partners in the Gulf region and the European Union, Oman seeks to contribute to collective efforts towards addressing shared challenges and enhancing mutual understanding. The summit in Brussels offers a crucial opportunity to bolster economic ties, strengthen people-to-people relations, and address pressing global issues, reaffirming the importance of collaborative approaches in today’s complex and interconnected world.
