The Council of Oman is currently participating in the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly meetings being held in Geneva from 13 to 17 October 2024. Oman’s delegation is being led by Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council. The meetings will focus on the role of parliaments in addressing various regional and international issues and making important decisions. Oman’s delegation will be actively taking part in numerous meetings, including those with the Standing Committee for Sustainable Development, the Standing Committee for Democracy and Human Rights, and the Association of Secretaries-General of National Parliaments, among others.

In addition to participating in various IPU meetings, Al Maawali also led Oman’s delegation at the Arab Group’s coordination meeting held on the sidelines of the IPU meetings. This meeting discussed the preparations for the IPU 37th Emergency Conference, which is scheduled to address the Israeli occupation forces’ aggression on the State of Palestine and the Lebanese Republic. The Arab Group at the IPU has appointed Al Maawali to head the emergency panel that will handle urgent issues submitted to the IPU for further discussion by the Algerian People’s National Assembly and the Palestinian National Council.

The IPU meetings are an important platform for Oman to engage in discussions on crucial global issues and collaborate with other nations to find solutions to pressing challenges. The participation of Oman’s delegation, led by Al Maawali, in various meetings will provide valuable insights and perspectives on topics such as sustainable development, democracy, human rights, international peace and security, and women and youth empowerment. This involvement underscores Oman’s commitment to engaging with the international community and contributing to the resolution of critical issues.

As part of the IPU meetings, Oman’s delegation will prioritize discussions on the role of parliaments in addressing regional and international issues and making informed decisions. By engaging with the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Oman’s delegation will work towards fostering cooperation and collaboration on key issues. The meetings will also provide a platform for Oman to showcase its leadership in promoting dialogue, peace, and stability within the region and beyond.

The IPU meetings also offer an opportunity for Oman to strengthen its relations with other nations and regional groups, such as the Arab Group, and to coordinate efforts to address urgent and emerging issues. Through active participation in discussions and meetings, Oman’s delegation will seek to build constructive partnerships and advocate for solutions that advance the values of democracy, human rights, and sustainable development. The leadership of Al Maawali and the engagement of Oman’s delegation in the IPU meetings reflect the country’s commitment to playing a proactive role in shaping global governance and promoting peace and stability.

In conclusion, Oman’s participation in the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly meetings in Geneva underscores the country’s commitment to engaging with the international community and addressing critical global issues. Led by Al Maawali, Oman’s delegation will play a key role in discussions on sustainable development, democracy, human rights, and international peace and security. Through active engagement in various meetings and forums, Oman will seek to contribute to the resolution of urgent challenges and promote dialogue, cooperation, and peace. The IPU meetings provide an important platform for Oman to showcase its leadership in promoting global governance and advocating for solutions that advance the values of democracy, human rights, and sustainable development.
