The Sultanate of Oman and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria have a longstanding relationship built on stable relations and shared visions on regional and international issues. Under the guidance of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the two countries are focused on developing commercial and economic ties across various sectors, including energy, mining, industry, and pharmaceutical production. This cooperation has been strengthened over the years through high-level visits and mutual respect between the two nations.

The joint committee formed by the governments of Oman and Algeria in 1991 plays a crucial role in enhancing bilateral cooperation in key areas such as energy, pharmaceuticals, transport, and tourism. The recent symposium for Omani business people and their Algerian counterparts highlighted the potential for joint projects and investment opportunities between the two countries. With trade exchange between the two nations reaching OMR41 million by the end of 2023, there is a strong foundation for further growth and partnership in economic fields.

The economic cooperation between Oman and Algeria includes joint ventures in industries such as energy, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. The partnership between Algerian National Hydrocarbons Company “Sonatrach” and Bahwan Group to produce ammonia and urea in Oran Province is a significant project reflecting the commitment to enhancing collaboration in industry and energy. Moreover, opportunities for joint investments in renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind energy, present promising avenues for sustainable energy production and future development.

The agricultural sector in Algeria, particularly desert farming, holds significant potential for growth, with plans to cultivate millions of hectares for agricultural production. Algeria’s expertise in fertilizer production and phosphate mining positions the country as a key player in supplying these essential resources. Additionally, Algeria’s advancements in the pharmaceutical sector offer opportunities for collaboration with Oman to leverage Algerian expertise in expanding pharmaceutical industries and export markets.

Cultural and scientific exchanges between Oman and Algeria are also flourishing, with scholarships offered for Omani students to study in Algerian universities and vice versa. The presence of the Algerian community in Oman, including professionals in the oil and energy sectors, further strengthens the ties between the two countries. The visit by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Oman in October 2024 is expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation and further opportunities for partnership in various sectors.

Overall, the relationship between Oman and Algeria is characterized by mutual respect, shared interests, and a commitment to fostering economic, cultural, and scientific ties. As both countries seek to strengthen their cooperation and expand their partnership in key industries, the future looks promising for continued growth and development in bilateral relations. The visit by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Oman marks a significant milestone in the deep-rooted and evolving relationship between the two nations, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration and mutual benefits for their peoples.
