Milan, Italy – Organizers have confirmed the main ice hockey arena for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina will be completed on schedule, despite recent concerns about its readiness. The Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena is slated to host 33 preliminary and knockout games during the Games, which run from February 6th to 22nd, 2026. Officials are assuring athletes and fans that the venue will be fully prepared for competition.

Pierre Ducrey, the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) sport director, stated unequivocally on Friday that there is “no chance at all” the arena will not be ready. This announcement comes ahead of a crucial test event designed to assess the facility’s functionality and playing surface. The confirmation aims to quell anxieties, particularly regarding the participation of National Hockey League (NHL) players.

Addressing Concerns About the Milan Ice Hockey Arena

Construction of the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena has been ongoing, leading to questions about its timely completion. Developers are currently focused on finishing touches, with organizers emphasizing the structure is already sound. Andrea Francisi, Chief Games Operations Officer for Milan-Cortina, confidently stated the participation of NHL players is “100 percent” guaranteed.

The return of NHL players to the Winter Olympics is a significant development. They haven’t competed since the 2014 Sochi Games. Negotiations between the IOC, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), and the NHL have been complex, centering on scheduling, insurance, and player safety.

NHL Participation and Playing Surface

Recent doubts about NHL participation arose from concerns expressed by Bill Daly, the NHL’s deputy commissioner, regarding the quality of the playing surface. These concerns prompted increased scrutiny of the arena’s construction and preparation. However, Ducrey expressed strong confidence that these issues have been addressed and that the NHL players will be present in February.

The inclusion of NHL stars is expected to significantly boost the profile and competitiveness of the Olympic hockey tournament. Fans and broadcasters alike anticipate a higher level of play with the world’s best hockey talent competing on the international stage. This return is the result of extensive collaboration between all parties involved.

Additionally, the successful completion of the arena is a key indicator of the overall preparedness of Milan-Cortina for hosting the Winter Olympics. The Games represent a substantial investment in infrastructure and tourism for the region. The project aims to leave a lasting legacy beyond the two weeks of competition.

Broader Olympic Preparations

Beyond the ice hockey arena, preparations for the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics are progressing across multiple venues. The organizers are focused on ensuring all facilities meet the standards required for world-class athletic competition. This includes venues for winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, and bobsleigh.

However, challenges remain. Concerns about sustainability and the environmental impact of the Games have been raised by advocacy groups. Organizers have pledged to prioritize eco-friendly practices and minimize the carbon footprint of the event.

The upcoming test event at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena will serve as a critical assessment of the venue’s readiness. It will provide an opportunity to identify and address any remaining issues before the arrival of athletes and spectators. The event is scheduled for later this year, with specific dates to be announced.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on finalizing all venue preparations and conducting further test events. The successful completion of the ice hockey arena is a positive sign, but ongoing monitoring and adjustments will be necessary to ensure a smooth and successful Winter Olympics in 2026. The organizers will continue to collaborate with the IOC, IIHF, and NHL to address any remaining concerns and deliver a memorable Games experience.
