Residents in Maramures, northern Romania, are dealing with the aftermath of a massive fire that engulfed six warehouses and destroyed entire orchards. The fire, which broke out on Saturday, forced the evacuation of 90 people from the area. Locals reported that the fire started suddenly and spread quickly to nearby houses, prompting them to try to extinguish it themselves until firefighters arrived on the scene.

One local resident, Cornelia Pop, shared her experience of calling emergency services when the fire was just 30 metres away from her home. She mentioned that residents used shovels and water pumps to try to stop the fire from advancing towards their homes. Another local, Alexandru Precup, mentioned that they were lucky that the vegetation had been mowed, otherwise the situation could have been catastrophic.

Over 250 firefighters from Maramures and neighbouring counties were mobilized to tackle the blaze. Despite their efforts, the fire destroyed multiple structures in the area. Fire crews continue to monitor the situation in case of any flare-ups, with the help of drones and aircraft flying over the affected area. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in an area of dry vegetation.

The Secretary of State in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Raed Arafat, emphasized the importance of the coordinated efforts of firefighters and locals in responding to the fire. Arafat also commended the quick response of emergency services in evacuating residents and containing the blaze. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of natural disasters.

The community in Maramures has come together to support those affected by the fire, with many offering their assistance and resources to help with the recovery process. The incident has highlighted the resilience of the residents in the face of adversity and their determination to rebuild and move forward. Authorities are working to ensure that the affected areas are safe and secure, and to prevent future incidents of this nature from occurring.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, it is essential for authorities to identify any potential risks or vulnerabilities that may have contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze. By implementing preventative measures and ensuring that emergency response protocols are in place, communities can better prepare for and mitigate the impact of similar incidents in the future. The unity and perseverance shown by the residents of Maramures serve as a testament to the strength and spirit of the community in the face of challenges.
