The tragic incident of a collapsed stage during a campaign rally in Mexico resulted in the deaths of nine people and left presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez uninjured but briefly hospitalized. The event took place in San Pedro Garza García, with at least 54 people injured and some trapped under the fallen stage. Among the casualties was a minor, and the injured were being treated, with some stable and others undergoing surgery. The collapse was caused by heavy winds, as shown in videos circulating on social media, prompting emergency response efforts and the suspension of the candidate’s campaign activities.

Mexico’s Nuevo Leon state Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda provided updates on the situation, urging solidarity and support for the victims. The incident occurred in the midst of a politically tense election season, with the upcoming presidential race expected to be a close competition between two female candidates. Claudia Sheinbaum, a former Mexico City mayor and ally of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Xochitl Gálvez, representing the opposition coalition, are leading in the polls. Due to the tragic event and the ensuing investigations, Álvarez Máynez’s chances of winning the presidency appear slim.

Civil Defense teams had inspected the stage structure before the rally, but unexpected strong winds led to its collapse, causing chaos and tragedy. The candidate emphasized the atypical weather conditions that caught organizers off guard, leading to the unfortunate incident. Governor García Sepúlveda warned of further inclement weather in the region, urging residents to stay indoors. With the election just around the corner, Mexico is facing unprecedented levels of political violence, with numerous candidates attacked and killed in recent months.

The June election in Mexico is set to be historic, as the country is likely to elect its first female president. Amidst the campaign turmoil and tragedy, the nation is preparing for a pivotal moment in its political history. The aftermath of the stage collapse has raised questions about safety and preparedness at campaign events, prompting calls for increased vigilance and caution. As the investigation unfolds and the country mourns the lives lost in this tragic incident, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved in the political process.
