Italian star Jannik Sinner is poised to overtake Novak Djokovic in the race for the world number one spot following Djokovic’s shocking exit from the Italian Open. Djokovic suffered a 6-2 6-3 defeat by Alejandro Tabilo after being hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs in Rome. Despite maintaining a lead of 1,090 points over Sinner, Djokovic’s position at the top is in jeopardy as he will be defending 2,000 points at the French Open and winning the title may not be enough to stay on top.

The unfortunate incident with the water bottle left Djokovic with headaches, nausea, and dizziness, impacting his performance on the court. With only six matches on clay under his belt, Djokovic heads to Paris slightly underprepared for the Grand Slam event. Meanwhile, Sinner, who had skipped Rome due to a hip injury, has a chance to reach the world number one spot by reaching the championship match at Roland Garros, even if Djokovic wins the tournament.

Djokovic’s season had already been tumultuous before the incident in Rome, with early exits at the Australian Open and other tournaments leading to speculation about his form. Despite winning three out of four Grand Slams last year, Djokovic made changes to his coaching staff in a bid to rediscover his best form. Heading into Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the Paris Olympics, Djokovic knows that he needs to improve his performance in order to have a chance at winning the title.

The prospect of Djokovic losing the world number one spot to Sinner adds further intrigue to the upcoming French Open. Sinner, who is only 22 years old, has the opportunity to make a mark on the tennis world by potentially reaching the number one ranking. While Djokovic’s track record speaks for itself, the pressure is on him to deliver a strong performance and prove that he is still at the peak of his game. As the countdown to Roland Garros begins, all eyes will be on Djokovic and Sinner to see how the battle for the top spot unfolds.
