President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has expressed that NATO membership is a crucial part of his “victory plan” for the country, which he presented to Ukrainian lawmakers recently. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance in the future, but did not specify a timeline for this development. The alliance’s 32 members have acknowledged that Ukraine is on an irreversible path towards membership, but have not set a definitive date for this to happen. Zelenskyy is currently in Brussels promoting his plan, which includes Ukraine’s NATO membership as a key component to begin negotiating peace and ward off Russian forces.

Ukraine has long sought NATO membership, but Western allies have been cautious due to ongoing conflict in the country. Membership could potentially trigger collective security guarantees and drag other countries into a conflict with Russia. Rutte assured Ukraine of NATO’s commitment to its security, stating that they are in it for the long haul. He mentioned that the focus should be on helping Ukraine regain territory and strengthen its position for future peace negotiations. The alliance is working with Ukraine to understand the details of Zelenskyy’s “victory plan” and what aspects can be implemented.

Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of an immediate NATO invitation for Ukraine, stating that Russia has taken advantage of Ukraine’s lack of membership. He believes that extending an invitation now with membership later would not have political consequences. Rutte praised Australia for sending US-made tanks to Kyiv, showing support for Ukraine. The two leaders will hold a joint press conference to discuss further developments and support from NATO for Ukraine’s security and peace efforts.

Overall, Zelenskyy’s push for Ukraine’s NATO membership as part of his “victory plan” has gained support from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who confirmed that Ukraine will join the alliance in the future. The details of when this will happen are still being discussed, as the alliance continues to work with Ukraine on implementing the necessary steps for membership. NATO remains committed to Ukraine’s security and peace efforts, with a focus on regaining territory and strengthening Ukraine’s position for future negotiations. Support from NATO and Western allies is crucial for Ukraine as it continues to fend off Russian forces and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
