Qatar is taking proactive steps towards enhancing media and information literacy (MIL) within its education system. The Second National Consultation on MIL recently held in Doha brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss the integration of MIL skills into the national curriculum. Led by UNESCO programme specialist Dr. Alton Grizzle, participants highlighted the importance of upskilling teachers in MIL to effectively navigate the digital landscape.

One of the key recommendations from the consultation was the need for tailored training programs to equip educators with the necessary tools and knowledge. Participants emphasized the importance of cultivating skepticism towards technology and understanding AI mechanisms and data utilization. Collaboration with AI developers was also proposed to gain diverse perspectives on the risks and opportunities associated with AI technologies.

In addition to focusing on teachers, the consultation also stressed the importance of engaging students through dynamic and interactive digital literacy courses. Stakeholders suggested incorporating digital literacy into the curriculum in a playful manner and tailoring courses to different age groups. The goal is to instill a culture of digital literacy among students that goes beyond traditional educational paradigms.

Interestingly, the role of parents in fostering MIL was also highlighted during the consultation. Educating parents on the importance of MIL and equipping them with relevant skills was deemed crucial. Participants also proposed engaging children as educators for their parents to ensure holistic familial engagement in MIL initiatives. By involving parents, educators, students, and policymakers, Qatar aims to create a robust MIL ecosystem that reflects its commitment to sustainable development in the digital age.

Looking to successful MIL models globally, participants urged for a strategic approach to integrating MIL skills into the Qatari curriculum. Gradual implementation, targeted courses for specific age groups, and starting MIL education from primary levels were among the strategies proposed. The consultation concluded with a call to action for collective efforts in nurturing a digitally literate generation capable of navigating the complexities of the digital era, positioning Qatar as a leader in MIL education.
