Muslim New Year 2024: First sighting of the Muharram crescent Moon in Abu Dhabi

The crescent of the month of Muharram 1446 was photographed from Abu Dhabi on Saturday, July 6 by the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory at 7.26pm UAE time. The UAE’s Astronomy Centre shared this image on social media. Residents of the UAE were granted a day off on July 7 in observance of the Hijri New Year, which falls on Muharram 1, marking the start of the Hijri year 1446 AH. Other countries like Oman also declared a holiday for the Hijri New Year, providing a long weekend for government and private sector employees.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) announced the holiday on the occasion of the Hijri New Year. Following the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s birthday celebration, UAE residents can anticipate a long weekend for National Day festivities. The holiday list for 2024, issued by the country’s Cabinet, includes these upcoming celebrations.
