Restaurants in Muharraq, Bahrain, have been illegally dumping cooking oil down the drains, causing blockages, foul odors, and flooding in the sewers. To address this issue, the Muharraq Municipal Council has passed a resolution mandating the use of dedicated oil waste containers at all eateries starting next year. This move aims to ensure proper management of waste and prevent further environmental damage caused by improper oil disposal. The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Ministry of Municipalities.

Dalal Al Moqahwi, a council member, highlighted the common practice among restaurants of pouring used oil down the drains, which has been causing significant problems in the area. She emphasized the importance of implementing the new rule to improve sanitation, protect public health, and address the issue of improper oil disposal. The new system will be similar to the one in place for boat and launch owners, who already use private recycling services for their oil waste.

During a recent council meeting, members urged the Ministry of Municipalities to include oil waste containers in the next cleaning contract, making it a mandatory requirement for restaurants to comply. The move comes in response to increasing complaints from residents about the negative impact of restaurants dumping oils into regular bins, attracting pests and worsening the local environment. Council chairman Abdulaziz Al Naar supported the proposal, noting the success of a similar system for boat owners.

Al Moqahwi warned about the environmental harm caused by restaurants dumping expired oils into pipes, leading to major blockages and other issues. She stressed the importance of enforcing the use of oil filters and specialized containers to prevent sewer floods and encourage recycling of used oil for other purposes. The Council plans to organize awareness campaigns for restaurant workers to educate them on the consequences of improper oil disposal and promote responsible waste management practices.

The proposal to mandate dedicated oil waste containers at restaurants in Muharraq is now under review by the Ministry of Municipalities for possible inclusion in the next cleaning contract. If approved, the measure is expected to significantly improve sanitation, protect public health, and prevent further environmental damage caused by the illegal dumping of cooking oil. By working with restaurants to adopt proper waste disposal practices, the Council aims to create a cleaner and healthier environment for residents and visitors in the area.
