Sofya Shamuzova, a Dubai-based mother of four, recently celebrated her 45th birthday by successfully summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. The mountain, standing at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters), provided the perfect setting for Sofya to plant the UAE flag at the summit, showcasing her personal challenge and tribute to her home country. Having spent more than half her life in the UAE, Sofya, a Ukrainian-born businesswoman, runs multiple businesses in Dubai, including a hospitality interiors company and a food and beverage chain.
Sofya’s future plans include scaling all Seven Summits, beginning with Mount Vinson in Antarctica in January 2025, followed by Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Elbrus, and Carstensz Pyramid. Despite originally planning to climb Kilimanjaro around her 40th birthday, the pandemic and business responsibilities forced her to postpone. Her perseverance can be traced back to her personal history and her father’s influence, who motivated her to achieve milestones from a young age.
Training under the guidance of 84-year-old boxing legend and mountain expedition doctor Ervand Illynsky, Sofya attributes her successful Kilimanjaro ascent to his invaluable experience. She embarked on the expedition with her eldest son, his friend, and a videographer, with only she and the videographer reaching the summit.
