In the UAE private sector, it is common for employees to have a side hustle. Recruitment experts advise individuals to communicate this with potential employers during the interview process. Kameron Hutchinson, recruitment director at Allsopp & Allsopp, emphasizes the importance of being upfront about side businesses during interviews. He suggests researching the employer’s policies to see if they allow for a side hustle alongside a full-time job. The key is to ensure that the full-time job remains the main focus, without misleading the employer.

Hutchinson notes that it is very common for individuals in the UAE to have a second source of income, and private sector policies are evolving to accommodate this trend. He highlights Dubai as a place where individuals can pursue multiple ventures simultaneously, unlike the more traditional work mentality in countries like the UK. Side hustles can range from running a social media brand to pursuing passions alongside a full-time job. Hutchinson recommends building a strong relationship with the employer and discussing any side hustles after establishing value in the workplace.

Nicki Wilson, owner and managing director of Genie Recruitment, observes that having part-time jobs in addition to a full-time job is becoming more common, especially among younger Generation Z employees. Wilson encourages employers to be open-minded about employees having side businesses, as it can lead to great talent retention. She believes that having balance and organizational skills are essential for managing both roles effectively. Wilson sees the trend of employees engaging in side businesses as beneficial, as it allows them to develop skills and contacts that complement their primary job.

From Wilson’s perspective, as long as the second job does not significantly impact the employee’s primary job duties, it can be a positive thing. She shares an example of an employee who runs a brownie business on the side, which helps her stay connected to clients in the food and beverage industry. Wilson emphasizes the importance of forward-thinking employers accommodating employees who have side businesses, as long as it does not hinder their work performance. Maintaining a balance between the side hustle and the main job is essential for effective management. With open communication and understanding, employees can pursue their passions while excelling in their full-time roles.
