Doha, Qatar – A public cleanliness march took place in Lusail Boulevard yesterday, organized by the Ministry of Municipality and Qatari Diar, aiming to foster a greater sense of community responsibility for maintaining a clean urban environment. The event, titled “One March… A Cleaner City,” drew participation from government officials, private sector representatives, and sanitation workers. Approximately 600 individuals and 32 specialized vehicles were involved in the initiative.
Under the patronage of Minister of Municipality H E Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, the march served as a platform to recognize the essential work of sanitation personnel and promote a culture of environmental stewardship. The Ministry of Municipality emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between public and private entities in achieving sustainable urban development and improved public health.
Promoting a Culture of Public Cleanliness in Qatar
The initiative builds upon the success of its inaugural edition, with organizers reporting improved coordination and expanded partnerships. According to officials, the primary goal of the march is to integrate environmental awareness into daily life, positioning cleanliness as a shared societal value. This aligns with Qatar’s broader national vision for sustainable cities and a high quality of life.
Recognizing Sanitation Workers
Assistant Undersecretary for Public Services Affairs Eng Abdullah Ahmed Al Karani highlighted the vital role sanitation workers play in maintaining public health and enhancing Qatar’s urban landscape. The Ministry of Municipality intends to use events like this to express gratitude for their contributions and encourage community members to appreciate their work. This recognition is particularly important as Qatar prepares to host major international events, increasing the demand for pristine public spaces.
Meanwhile, Director of the Public Cleanliness Department, Muqbil Madhour Al Shammari, noted the increased cooperation with partners like Qatari Diar and other national entities. He explained that the march is designed to be a national awareness platform, bringing together diverse stakeholders to reinforce the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.
An Interactive Approach to Environmental Education
This year’s march adopted a more interactive and carnival-like atmosphere, according to Hamad Hassan Al Tamimi, Head of the Awareness and Education Section at the Public Cleaning Department. The intention was to combine environmental messaging with entertainment and community engagement, making the experience enjoyable for all participants. This approach reflects a growing trend towards using creative methods to promote sustainability and responsible citizenship.
However, maintaining long-term behavioral change requires sustained effort beyond one-day events. The Ministry of Municipality acknowledged the need for ongoing educational campaigns and infrastructure improvements to support a cleaner Qatar.
The Public Cleanliness march represents an annual effort to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a clean and sustainable urban environment. The event brings together government agencies, companies, community organizations, and the public in a collective demonstration of responsibility.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Municipality plans to evaluate the impact of this year’s march and incorporate feedback into the planning of future events. Further details regarding the next edition, including the date and location, are expected to be announced in the coming months. The success of this initiative will likely depend on continued collaboration and a sustained commitment to promoting a culture of cleanliness throughout Qatar.
