JEDDAH – Saudi Arabia and Pakistan reaffirmed their commitment to strengthened bilateral ties focused on Islamic affairs and countering extremism during a meeting in Jeddah on Thursday. Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Sheikh hosted Pakistan’s Minister of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf Zaman for discussions on religious cooperation, dawah programs, and promoting moderate Islamic values. The meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration between the two nations on issues of religious significance.

The meeting, held at the ministry in Jeddah, centered on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual religious interest. Both ministers emphasized the importance of joint efforts to foster tolerance and combat extremist ideologies, according to statements released by both governments. This dialogue comes amid regional and global concerns regarding the spread of radical interpretations of Islam.

Strengthening Saudi-Pakistan Cooperation in Islamic Affairs

Sheikh Al-Sheikh highlighted the Kingdom’s longstanding and deep relationship with Pakistan, noting the significant support Saudi Arabia provides across multiple sectors. He specifically emphasized the Kingdom’s dedication to initiatives that benefit the Pakistani people and promote authentic Islamic brotherhood. The Saudi ministry indicated a desire to build upon existing frameworks for religious exchange.

Minister Zaman expressed gratitude for the Kingdom’s consistent support, acknowledging Saudi Arabia’s role as a global leader in promoting tolerance and coexistence. He praised the Kingdom’s contributions to religious, humanitarian, and development projects within Pakistan. This support is particularly crucial given Pakistan’s current economic challenges, analysts say.

Focus on Dawah Programs and Moderation

A key area of discussion involved the exchange of expertise in dawah – Islamic outreach – programs. Both countries aim to refine these programs to effectively convey a message of peace and moderation. The ministers reportedly explored opportunities for joint training initiatives for religious leaders and scholars.

Combating extremism was another central theme. Both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have faced challenges related to extremist groups and ideologies. The ministers agreed on the need for continued collaboration in identifying and addressing the root causes of radicalization. This includes promoting education and countering extremist narratives online.

Additionally, the conversation touched upon the importance of interfaith harmony. Pakistan, with its diverse religious population, and Saudi Arabia, as the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites, both recognize the value of fostering understanding and respect between different faiths. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to promote interreligious dialogue globally.

Regional Implications and Existing Ties

The meeting reflects the broader strategic partnership between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Pakistan is a key ally of Saudi Arabia, and the two countries share close economic and military ties. However, the relationship has faced occasional strains, particularly regarding regional geopolitical issues.

The emphasis on religious cooperation is particularly noteworthy given the evolving security landscape in the region. Both countries are concerned about the potential for extremist groups to exploit regional instability. This collaboration aims to strengthen their collective ability to counter these threats. The Kingdom has been actively promoting a moderate form of Islam as a counter-narrative to extremist ideologies.

Furthermore, the discussions align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which includes a focus on promoting a moderate and tolerant Islam. The Kingdom is investing heavily in initiatives to showcase the true values of Islam and counter extremist interpretations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Saudi society and attract foreign investment.

The meeting also comes as Pakistan navigates a period of political and economic uncertainty. Saudi Arabia’s continued support is seen as vital for Pakistan’s stability. The Kingdom has previously provided financial assistance to Pakistan and has expressed its commitment to supporting the country’s economic development. Interfaith harmony is also a key component of Pakistan’s national agenda.

Following the meeting, both ministers expressed optimism about the future of Saudi-Pakistani cooperation. No specific agreements were announced, but officials indicated that working groups will be formed to explore concrete areas for collaboration. The next steps involve detailed planning and implementation of the initiatives discussed. The timeline for these developments remains uncertain, and observers will be watching for further announcements in the coming months regarding specific projects and financial commitments related to Islamic guidance and regional security.
