Football icon Lionel Messi played a key role as world champions Argentina secured a 2-0 win over Angola in a friendly match held in Luanda on Friday. The victory marked a dominant display by the Albiceleste, who are second in the world rankings, 87 places above Angola.

Messi set up Lautaro Martinez to score the first goal on 44 minutes. Later, Martinez assisted Messi, who scored the second goal with a shot into the far corner of the net after 82 minutes. Both scorers were substituted late in the second half, a decision that did not impact the outcome of the game.

Argentina’s Strong Performance

Argentina’s win was largely expected given their higher world ranking. The team has been performing well, having qualified for the 2026 World Cup by topping the South American qualifiers with 38 points from 18 matches, winning 12, drawing two, and losing four. They finished nine points ahead of second-placed Ecuador.

The match in Luanda was part of the celebrations for Angola’s 50th anniversary of independence from Portugal. Angola, known as the Black Antelopes, have had limited success in qualifying for the World Cup. They made a surprise appearance at the 2006 World Cup in Germany but have since struggled to replicate that success.

Angola’s Football Ambitions

Angola’s qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup was less successful. They won just two of their 10 qualifying matches, finishing 11 points behind group winners Cape Verde. The team’s inability to qualify for the World Cup in recent years highlights the challenges they face in competing against stronger football nations.

Despite the loss, Angola’s football team has shown glimpses of potential in the past. Their appearance at the 2006 World Cup was a significant achievement, where they edged out Nigeria based on head-to-head records after winning at home and drawing away.

Future Prospects for Angola

The friendly match against Argentina provided Angola with valuable experience against a top-ranked team. Such matches can be crucial for the development of their football program. By competing against stronger opponents, Angola can gain insights into areas that need improvement.

Meanwhile, Argentina will continue their preparations for the 2026 World Cup. As reigning champions, they are among the favorites to win the tournament again. However, they will need to maintain their current form and continue to develop their squad to remain competitive at the highest level.

As the football world continues to evolve, teams like Angola will look to improve their standings and potentially qualify for future World Cups. For now, the focus remains on development and gaining experience through matches against stronger opponents like Argentina.

The next steps for both teams will involve further international fixtures. Argentina is expected to continue competing in high-profile friendlies and potentially in the Copa America, while Angola will look to regroup and prepare for their next qualifying campaign. The outcome of their future matches will be closely watched by football fans and analysts alike.
