Inter Miami CF secured a decisive 5-1 victory over New York City FC on Saturday, advancing to the 2025 MLS Cup final. The win marks a significant turnaround for the team and puts them one step closer to claiming the Major League Soccer championship. A hat-trick from Tadeo Allende, coupled with goals from Mateo Silvetti and Telasco Segovia, propelled Miami past their Eastern Conference rivals.

The match, played at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, saw Inter Miami dominate much of the play. While Lionel Messi did not score, he delivered a crucial assist for Silvetti’s goal, effectively sealing New York City FC’s fate. Vancouver Whitecaps will be Inter Miami’s opponent in the final, after defeating San Diego 3-1.

Inter Miami’s Road to the MLS Cup Final

Inter Miami’s journey to the final has been a story of resurgence. After a challenging mid-season, the team found new momentum, culminating in a commanding 4-0 win against FC Cincinnati in the previous round. This latest victory demonstrates a growing cohesion and attacking prowess within the squad, fueled by the continued influence of veteran players like Messi.

Allende proved to be a constant threat, opening the scoring in the 14th minute and adding two more goals later in the match. His ability to exploit defensive gaps and clinical finishing were key to breaking down New York City FC’s resistance. New York managed a goal through Justin Haak, but Miami quickly responded, regaining control of the game.

Messi’s Impact Beyond Goals

Although Messi didn’t find the back of the net himself, his contribution was far from negligible. Coach Javier Mascherano lauded the 38-year-old as “extraordinary,” emphasizing his playmaking ability and the intangible boost he provides to the team. The assist for Silvetti’s goal was a prime example of Messi’s vision and precision passing, turning a tight situation into a comfortable lead.

Mascherano highlighted that Messi’s presence offers “peace of mind” to the team, even when he isn’t directly scoring. This leadership and ability to elevate the performance of those around him are considered vital to Inter Miami’s success. The team’s improved form coincides with Messi’s increased comfort and integration into the squad.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver Whitecaps delivered a dominant performance against San Diego, securing their place in the final with a 3-1 victory. Brian White scored twice, and an own goal from San Diego goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega further solidified Vancouver’s advantage. Hirving Lozano’s late goal for San Diego offered a glimmer of hope, but a subsequent red card for Sisniega extinguished any realistic chance of a comeback.

Vancouver previously defeated Inter Miami 5-1 on aggregate in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals earlier in the year. However, Inter Miami’s current form suggests a different outcome is possible. The Whitecaps’ strong offensive showing and defensive solidity pose a significant challenge to Inter Miami’s aspirations.

Mascherano stressed the importance of team unity, stating the team has “strengthened as a group” and developed an “unbreakable” bond. He believes this collective spirit, regardless of who starts, is a crucial asset as they head into the final.

The MLS Cup final is scheduled to be played next Saturday at Inter Miami’s home field in Fort Lauderdale. The match will represent a capstone to the 2025 season and a test of the progress made by both teams. The outcome remains uncertain, with both Inter Miami and Vancouver showcasing their abilities throughout the playoffs. Key factors to watch will be Messi’s influence on the game, Vancouver’s ability to replicate their semi-final performance, and the tactical approaches employed by both coaches.

The final promises to be a captivating contest, with both franchises vying for their first MLS Cup title. The league and its fans await with anticipation to see which team will ultimately lift the trophy.
