Lionel Messi, the iconic Argentine footballer, will celebrate his 37th birthday by returning to MetLife Stadium, the site of one of his career’s most disappointing moments, when Argentina takes on Chile in the Copa America. Eight years ago, Messi was part of the Argentina team that lost the Copa America final to Chile, marking the third consecutive final loss for the star player with his national team. The narrative at the time centered around Messi’s inability to replicate his club success with Barcelona on the international stage, in contrast to the legendary Diego Maradona who had achieved both.

The defeat in the Copa America final was a breaking point for Messi, leading him to announce his retirement from the national team in a moment of frustration and emotional turmoil. However, the heartfelt pleas from fans, including the country’s president and Maradona himself, convinced Messi to reconsider his decision and continue representing Argentina. The subsequent World Cup triumph in 2022 not only silenced the critics but also lifted a heavy burden off Messi’s shoulders, transforming him as a player and a person, according to his coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino.

As Messi prepares to face Chile once again in the Copa America, the focus is on the present and the opportunity to secure a third consecutive major tournament title for Argentina. Coach Lionel Scaloni is determined to maintain his team’s momentum from their successful start in the tournament, while acknowledging the challenge posed by a motivated Chile side under the guidance of Ricardo Gareca. The expectation is for an intense and competitive match between two South American football powerhouses.

With Argentina being the clear favorites to win the Copa America, all eyes are on Messi and his teammates as they strive to add another title to their illustrious history. The memories of past defeats and disappointments have fueled the determination of the Argentine squad to make a strong statement in this tournament. As the stage is set for another showdown between Argentina and Chile, the focus remains on the present and the pursuit of glory, with no room for nostalgia or reflection on past failures. The world champions are poised for a challenging yet rewarding campaign in their quest for Copa America success.
