In a recent statement at the United Nations, Hollywood actor Meryl Streep brought attention to the dire situation of women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Streep highlighted the fact that a female cat has more freedom in the country than a woman, emphasizing the need for global leaders to prioritize the rights and inclusion of Afghan women and girls in future discussions.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 following the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces after two decades of war. Since then, the group has implemented strict measures that have severely restricted the rights and freedoms of women in the country. This crackdown on women’s rights has sparked international concern and calls for action to protect Afghan women and girls.

Under Taliban rule, most girls have been prevented from attending high school, and women have been barred from universities. The group has also closed beauty salons and imposed restrictions on women’s travel without a male guardian, further limiting their freedom and independence. These oppressive measures have significantly impacted the lives of Afghan women and girls.

Meryl Streep’s comparison of the freedoms of a female cat to those of an Afghan woman sheds light on the drastic inequalities and restrictions faced by women in the country. She pointed out that a cat may freely enjoy the outdoors and the sunshine, while women are denied these basic rights. Streep’s remarks serve as a reminder of the urgent need to address the challenges facing Afghan women and advocate for their rights on a global scale.

The Taliban claims to uphold rights in accordance with their interpretation of Islamic law. However, their strict enforcement of morality rules, such as banning women from public spaces and restricting their activities, has drawn criticism from human rights organizations and world leaders. The formalization of these rules by the Taliban’s leadership further exacerbates the plight of Afghan women and underscores the urgency of addressing this issue.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the critical role of women in society and the importance of their education, employment, and inclusion in leadership positions. He highlighted the need for Afghanistan to recognize and protect the rights and freedoms of women in order to achieve progress and development on the global stage. Guterres’ remarks echo the calls for action to support Afghan women and girls and ensure their rights are upheld in the face of oppressive policies imposed by the Taliban.
