The impact of the US elections on Europe is a topic of great interest as the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the continent. Two Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have taken sides and offered pitches for the two candidates, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, advocating for why they believe their preferred candidate would be a better choice for Europe.

António Tânger Corrêa, a Patriots MEP from Portugal, supports Donald Trump and believes that Trump’s first term benefited the world by maintaining peace and not starting any new wars. He argues that Trump’s approach to selling weapons without starting conflicts is essential for Europe. On the other hand, Daniel Freund, a Greens/EFA MEP from Germany, advocates for Kamala Harris, citing concerns about Trump cozying up to dictators and undermining democracy, including in Europe.

When it comes to the war in Ukraine, Tânger believes that Trump and his team have a better chance of finding a solution to the conflict based on promises made in the past. However, Freund expresses concerns about Trump’s lukewarm support for Ukraine and the pressure he might put on the country to make concessions to Russia. He highlights bipartisan support in Congress for further assistance to Ukraine.

In terms of Europe’s defense, Tânger argues that Trump’s focus on investment in defense contrasts with Harris’s lack of experience in security and defense matters. Meanwhile, Freund points out that Trump has called for European countries to invest more in defense and has questioned NATO’s common defense clause for members not meeting spending targets. He believes Harris would be a better candidate for cooperation within NATO.

When considering peace in the Middle East, Tânger supports Trump’s approach of seeking to ease tensions, while criticizing Harris for potentially exacerbating conflicts. Freund suggests that the unpredictability of a Trump presidency could lead to chaotic outcomes, whereas Harris might bring a calmer and more intelligent approach to foreign policy.

In terms of Europe’s economy and trade, Tânger believes that Trump is stronger economically and predicts a more stable trade relationship with the United States under his leadership. However, Freund expresses concerns about the potential return of tariff wars under a Trump administration, leading him to prefer Harris for trade relations.

Overall, the opinions of MEPs on the US elections reflect the diverse views within European politics on which candidate would best serve Europe’s interests. The outcome of the election will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Europe in various areas, from defense and foreign policy to trade relations and democracy. Europe awaits the results with anticipation, knowing that the next US President will play a crucial role in shaping the continent’s future.
